Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Barnes.
Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started working in sports in high school, I was a football team manager which is where my passion started to pursue sports on the business side. I decided to study Sports and Entertainment Management at Fresno State. I went to Fresno State on a scholarship but decided after Covid to pursue sports full time. Shortly after that decision, I was able to work many big tentpole events such as Super Bowl, NFL Draft, Men’s Final Four and College Playoffs. I also worked for Legends Hospitality at Sofi Stadium and San Francisco Giants. Along with working at my athletic department at Fresno state as a marketing Intern, event operations and equipment manager for the football team. All those opportunities granted me an opportunity to work for the Indianapolis Colts after I graduated. Which led to more doors opening up to working for Red Bull and now the NFL for my first season.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has come with its ups and downs. I faced numerous rejections from companies I applied to, encountered difficult experiences on the job, and often sacrificed time with family and friends to stay committed to my work. Through it all, I remained focused on building my resume and continued to roll with the punches.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I serve as an Associate of Football Operations, specifically within Football Exposure at the National Football League. In this role, I support partnerships and programs designed to expand opportunities for minorities pursuing front office and head coaching careers, as well as initiatives for minority students. I also contribute to the NFL Women’s Community, while specializing in operations, data management, and program coordination.
What I am most proud of is the impact I’m able to make through my work. Helping students build their resumes and connect with industry professionals is incredibly fulfilling. Given my extensive background in sports, I also feel honored to share my journey and serve as an example of success as a young Black woman in the industry.
What sets me apart is my drive and work ethic. My passion for sports began as an athlete and has continued throughout my career on the business side. I am motivated by the work I do and enjoy creating innovative ideas that move NFL priorities forward, which is reflected in the projects and initiatives I’ve had the opportunity to support.
What matters most to you?
My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is what matters most to me, as I believe He is the reason I am in the position I hold today. Beyond my faith, my family is my greatest source of motivation. Their unwavering support and the sacrifices they have made continue to inspire me to work harder every day.
