Daily Inspiration: Meet Julianna Joy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julianna Joy

Hi Julianna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started writing music when I was 11. I was really fascinated with art and with storytelling even from a young age, and this career path felt so natural to me that I chose to pursue it seriously when I was 14. I lived in Chicago at the time, which does have a very strong music scene but not a scene that leans into the pop sound very often, so I knew if I wanted to pursue music, I would have to move somewhere that had a strong pop scene. My mom was terrified about the idea of me moving to LA, but once I met with Jamie Cerreta (current president of my publishing company), we both knew that this was the direction. I moved out to LA when I was 18, a few weeks before the pandemic started, and since then I’ve been making music with some of the best in the industry.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The pandemic definitely made it a lot harder. I think having so much success early in my career and not being able to be in front of my audience in any other way other than a screen made it feel really impossible to continue to grow. I think the pandemic also reshaped how we approach in-person interaction with music. I think touring is a thousand times more difficult, festivals are gatekeepy, and the emphasis on social media from Big Music (record labels, management companies, etc) has made real staying power seem hard to achieve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist and songwriter who writes left-of-center pop music. It’s synth heavy, dark, and pushes the boundaries of what is done in modern pop music. I write for other artists and songwriters as well. I am most proud of my upcoming record – there is nothing out there right now that feels like my record does.

How do you define success?
Success is getting to do what I love everyday no matter what, whether I’m sick or healthy or rich or poor or hungry or full.
