Daily Inspiration: Meet Jue Lin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jue Lin

Hi Jue, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was little, I was a child with a vivid imagination. I wasn’t very satisfied with the rules and scenes of real life, so I often imagined creating another world and immersing myself in it to experience a different life. Since elementary school, I’ve been drawing my own games and comics, and acting out the characters within them. At that time, the genres I created were fairly typical, mostly fantasy stories. However, as time went on, I became increasingly fascinated by more bizarre things, like terrifying monsters and ghosts. In short, as someone who might be seen by those around me as a staunch idealist, I entered China’s top film academy to study directing with a strong belief in the supernatural, where I further learned how to use visuals to express my inner world. Now, my reason for studying production design in Los Angeles is the same: to personally experience the sensory impact that an otherworldly space can bring, different from reality.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, my path has been far from smooth. It took me about six years to convince my parents to let me study art. They love me, but neither of them is in the art industry, so it took a great deal of effort just to help them understand what I want to do. Besides, although I’ve always known what I love and what kind of effect I want to achieve in the future, I often struggle with the form I should use to bring my ideas to life. The upside is that this has allowed me to explore various aspects of visual arts, such as cinematography, drawing, graphic design, and concept design, etc. This field has so many diverse and interesting forms, and I’ve been gradually trying different ones to express my ideas. I believe that in the future, I will definitely find my own path to show everyone what’s going on in my mind every day.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work mainly focuses on concept design, photography, and video projects. Through these works, I aim to build worlds—whether large or small, with potential stories—within the perspectives of others. Since I am drawn to supernatural culture, I tend to incorporate various non-realistic ideas into my pieces. Moreover, when creating, I always have an abstract goal in mind: to transcend and subvert my inherent understanding in order to unlock more of my mind. I try to imagine things I’ve never seen before, which is admittedly difficult because our lives are based on what we’ve already encountered, and no matter how hard we try to conceptualize, it’s still a reconfiguration of existing elements. But the process is incredibly fun. I enjoy breaking away from fixed concepts, exploring my potential without relying on references, and this often leads me down unexpected paths.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
When I’m shooting a short film, that’s when I collaborate most closely with others, especially during my undergraduate years. That was the first time I realized how captivating it is to turn words into visuals with a group of like-minded friends. To me, it wasn’t work—it was the pure joy of creation. We brainstormed and shared ideas as they popped into our heads, and laughed out loud at unexpected situations on set. This is the kind of collaboration I strive for. In other scenarios, such as when I’m working on photography projects, I focus more on the spiritual exchange with friends to gain inspiration. I remember once during a trip, my friends and I had a long conversation online about our views on the universe. In that moment, I suddenly saw the environment around me in a new light, and my camera was calling out, “Capture all of this.” These moments of soul connection are rare and precious.
