Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonnie Morris
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first took an interest in music at the age of 5 when my father passed away, as it quickly became a mechanism to help me cope with his untimely demise. However, it wasn’t until the age of 14 that I would first pick up a pen and begin to write full length songs, and 20 when I’d record my first of many. The inspiration to begin and take it serious came from hearing Eminem and his hit record, “Lose Yourself”. After years of trail and error, recording and releasing music followed by self taught marketing and advertising, it finally all came together through resilience, perseverance and an unwavering faith in myself and God.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not, it takes absolute courage to drop a record to essentially an empty abyss over and over, and yet hold faith that you’ll figure it out, create a fanbase and push your music and sound over the top. To financially bet on yourself time and time again with the odds against you due to other financial responsibilities such as child care, utilities and self care. To endure what seems like never ending doubt from self and others, and keep alive that faith, takes a serious desire to make your outcome real. To manifest it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Music artist who predominantly raps, and occasionally sings. Mostly Hooks. I am known for several of my breakout records, including “Dat Bag” “BIG STEPPER” and “That be That”. I am most proud of myself for never giving up through the sheer amount of pain that the journey of chasing a dream brings, and always doing the work it takes no matter what I’m going through or my mental state. My distinct sound, beat selection and voice definitely sets me apart from the rest of the music industry.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I’ve always been more of an observer and listener by nature, quiet and to myself regardless if I’m in the club or the library. My demeanor remains the same. I know how and when to turn up, but it won’t come before reading the room and understanding my surroundings. My interest are video games, basketball and reading and journalism.
