Daily Inspiration: Meet Joe Marcy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Marcy.

Hi Joe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Manhattan Beach, CA. A compassionate and philanthropic community along the coast. With loving parents, family, and friends, I grew up believing anything is possible. I still believe that today.

We recently celebrated the installation of a rainbow crosswalk on Manhattan Beach Boulevard and the Strand. This is a path of hope and inspiration, unity and empowerment. Everyone plays a role in diversity, equity, and inclusion. It’s not enough to invite someone to the table. It’s about making sure they know they belong there too. I couldn’t be more proud of my hometown.

Monterey, CA is my second home. I’ve been an executive for the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau since 2016. I’m grateful to represent a destination with award-winning wines, world-class golf, and extraordinary hospitality.

For me, a fulfilling life involves selfless service and hard work. I’m passionate and dedicated to my faith, family, friends, my career, and civic engagement.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Navigating life is hard, no matter who you are.

I reflect on my childhood often. I was a gay Filipino Italian kid learning about the world and myself. It was the happiest and hardest time of my life.

I’ve learned a few things since then. Life often teaches us humility. I was painfully reminded when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and when my father was hospitalized for kidney failure. Nothing will change your perspective faster than a health scare. Thankfully, my parents are healthy and thriving today.

Remember to prioritize what’s important. Life’s challenges will break you down and hopefully make you stronger.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an executive for the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau, a Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) and Certified Incentive Travel Professional (CITP). I serve on the Global Board of Trustees for Meeting Professionals International (MPI) the largest meeting and event industry association in the world. I’m a Cultural Arts Commissioner for the City of Manhattan Beach and a three-term president for the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair Association.

I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done. Developing a long-term strategy and incorporating DEI have been meaningful contributions. Our fundraising efforts and collaborations have been crucial to our success. Giving back to the community is everything.

Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Global RISE Award Member of the Year

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Establishing family traditions. Carving pumpkins for Halloween, gathering around the table for Thanksgiving, decorating the noble fir for Christmas, church on Easter Sunday, annual vacations and more. These are unforgettable memories that defined my childhood. I hope to carry them on for generations.
