Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffery Aguirre.
Hi Jeffery, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had a car detailing business located in a high-rise building.. but I’ve always been a competitive Powerlifter and wanted to teach people how to exercise in my local community.. so in 2009 I started a small gym and rented space to a few other trainers, some of which still have gyms to this day themselves.. I always like to train in private local gyms and they weren’t any in my area anymore, so it was a perfect time for me to start one.. my kids were still young, so I took a long-term approach to get to where I am now.. I’ve been located in the Worldport area of SAN PEDRO since 2011 and we have a 2500 square-foot facility.. with almost 200 members personal trainers, small group training for ladies and a few youth programs..
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
at first, I thought everybody would want to join my gym, but apparently not everybody wants to work out they have to be convinced sometimes.. but I’ve grown steadily over the years and it’s become like community.. I’ve had the same members for years and years and getting new ones every month.. a few of my mentors owned gyms.. I was warned about how hard it could be as a business.. it takes time to build your reputation.. many gyms come and go. I wanted to do this for the rest of my life…
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve always been a coach/Personal trainer.. I’ve specialize in getting the average person much stronger than they ever thought possible.. of course most people wanna lose weight and be healthier.. that takes patience and learning self-control and proper diet and nutrition habits.. since I was a Powerlifter I was able to make myself strong enough to squat over 600 pounds and bench for over 400 pounds drug free and stay strong at 52 years old now.. I like to work with teens, teaching them the good habits that would carry them through a lifetime.. my daughter Kelly has been working out at my gym since she was a child and has just turned 21.. exercise has been her safe Haven.. She was bullied in high school… then her mother, my wife became sick with cancer.. recently passed away a year ago.. I’m not sure what Kelly would’ve done without The gym…
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
it might sound cliché.. but people always comment to me how they like the community.. I make it a point to introduce everyone to each other and they seem to all become good friends… to the point where it doesn’t always feel like exercise, but mental health and a good time.. I try to make everyone feel welcome and give a lot of tips on how to work out… everybody helps each other.. I like to play a lot of 80s and 90s music in the gym as well… of course you can’t make everybody happy all the time.. I also have a lot of old-school equipment that you don’t find in other gyms.. good old-fashioned machines and barbells.. The emphasis is on getting stronger and looking better… not just being seen
