Daily Inspiration: Meet Izzy Perri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Izzy Perri.

Izzy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Things start for me when I was roughly ten years old and my dad got me electric ladyland by jimi hendrix on cd. I just remember hearing the completely chaotic sounds of the first track and feeling this huge sense of wonder about music and realizing it was something I needed in my life. I starting learning piano at around seven years old and then soon transitioned into guitar and starting watching a lot of videos online of my favorite guitar players in order to try and learn as much as I could quickly. In high school I was in a terribly angsty pop-punk band playing shows at local rec centers and moshing, which was a pretty incredible thing to look back on. Once I got to college I started to take the art of actually making music much more seriously. My friend and I began producing together and he really taught me the beginnings of what I needed to know when it came to Ableton and sound design. From there, we both moved to LA to pursue music, making mostly EDM music and eventually, I went on to pursue my own more pop-leaning sound, producing, writing and performing everything myself. Since then, I’ve discovered a true love of ’80s inspired sounds. I’ve always been pretty obsessed with synthesizers and their limitless power. And that particular era of music really catapulted synth music into an entirely new place which really changed everything about music. And the ripples are present in so much of what exists today. All I want is to capture the feeling that the music from that time gives to me and to so many others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say smooth is the operative word. Being in music, especially in a city like LA where every other person is somehow the best creator you’ve ever met or most successful business person working in their field, it’s never been simple. I have definitely put myself in many tricky situations on the business side, lost money, been promised money I never saw, played shows for two people, put songs out no one heard, took them down, it goes on and on. But what I’ve found to be most important is to simply continue learning and find the fun in things. For me, I play instruments and always have had fun actually making music, so I know there’s going to be joy in that no matter what. There’s so much to get caught up in within a city like this, but I think finding a community and realizing there are people that enjoy the same things that I do helps quite a bit. And for me, a lot of that has come from building an audience online. People are so passionate about the genre that I work in and while it’s been a massive challenge finding those people and discovering my musical identity, it’s been worth it to find a niche and develop a relationship with my fans.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a multi-genre producer, writer, engineer and content creator. I’m also a photo and video editor. I’ve largely become known online as a musician, building a large audience on TikTok from turning modern-day popular music into 80’s inspired anthems. A big reason as to why I do my covers is because my original music is heavily inspired by the sounds of the 80s, which is an era of music that I sonically and visually love. I’ve been a producer and writer for other artists as well for the past 4-5 years across a wide range of musical styles. One of the things I’m personally most proud of is the fact that tears for fears saw one of my TikToks this past year and commented on a post of mine which completely blew me away. I also just got an email from Al Green’s team asking me to cover one of his songs, which I’m actually working on at this very moment. Some of the recognition I’ve gotten online over the past year has been pretty hard to comprehend, and I’m just trying to continue to put my best foot forward and write the best music I can.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I have a studio that I’ve built out over the past few years where I love to collaborate. I have artists come in who I write, record and produce with and that’s usually the best way to work. Working in person is always important I think. It’s always better when you can feel a sense of friendship with people that isn’t purely digital. But truly, I’m open to anything. If you want to support me simply follow along to all the things I’m doing on TikTok and YouTube. I just had my first-ever youtube live stream this past week to celebrate the release of my newest single “Good Tonight”. I’m super excited about the idea of streaming more and showing people more of my process.
