Today we’d like to introduce you to Hayley Vangäart.
Hi Hayley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began working in the film industry around 8 years ago in New York City as a set PA before moving to Los Angeles in 2017. I started an independent production company, Cosmic Demand Productions back in 2020 while also still working at the studio level.
I currently also work for Warner Bros. as the Health and Safety Supervisor for Post Production: Features.
I stepped into the HS leadership role when the film industry was starting Productions up again after the initial pandemic shutdown.
At the time, it felt like a lot of things (skills, knowledge, experiences) in my life had lead up to that point and I was meant to step up to the plate and get the show (industry) back on the road in the midst of a global crisis.” I was 26 at the time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As anyone in the film industry can attest, the work-life balance can be a struggle sometimes; especially when you’re in the development phase of your own projects. Nevertheless, I’m very grateful for all the amazing experiences I’ve had and to just be consistently working in this industry.
It’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears, but I can’t help but be grateful to be a part of the magic.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in filmmaking ultimately. I’ve fortunately got to have many experiences in different spheres from production to post-production and musical scoring. The adaptability and remaining calm under pressure is what I’m most proud of. It took a lot of practice to get to that point.
The industry sometimes requires you to pull off the seemingly impossible. It’s when you overcome those moments you feel truly like Wonder Woman.
What matters most to you? Why?
How I lead a department/team is what’s most important for me.
Through that experience, you really discover what works and what doesn’t.
A couple of points I like to remind myself when leading people is,
– Everyone’s going to require different communication styles. It’s important to pay attention and work with your team so they too have everything they need. Everyone wants to be seen and heard.
– Separate the ego. Don’t react emotionally.
– Micromanagement only weakens teams.
