Daily Inspiration: Meet Guramrit Malhotra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Guramrit Malhotra

Hi Guramrit, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey began back in 2019-2020, when I was an undergraduate studying film. Early on, I realized I needed to carve my own path, especially with the challenges of entering a hyper-competitive market right out of college. During my sophomore year, I decided to start building my own business. While I initially focused on videography, photography came to me naturally, particularly through my love for lighting—especially off-camera flash.

Lighting has always been a passion of mine, and there’s something captivating about creating images with dynamic flash setups. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside talented professionals and wedding studios, many of whom I still collaborate with today. Gradually, I expanded my client base, all while enjoying the freedom this career offers—whether it’s traveling to stunning locations, meeting wonderful people, or experiencing incredible food.

I feel truly blessed to be part of this industry and to share the stage with so many gifted individuals.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
To call any business a smooth road would be far from the truth. Every business—whether service or product-based—comes with its own set of unique challenges. In my own experience, I’ve encountered plenty of those along the way. One thing I’ve noticed is that your intellect often outpaces your business growth. You learn and evolve at a faster rate than your business does, which can lead to feelings of anxiety or even imposter syndrome, where you constantly feel like you’re not doing enough.

The fear of failure is also a major factor in any business, and it’s something I’ve dealt with personally. For me, the mental aspect of running a business has been a significant test. While I wouldn’t necessarily call it a struggle, it’s definitely been something that challenges me and continues to test me from time to time. Navigating that balance between mental health and business growth has been one of the key challenges I’ve faced.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Bokeh is the business I run, and while I’m at the forefront, it wouldn’t be complete without the incredible collective of creatives I’ve had the privilege to know over the years. No project is ever done alone. I make it a priority to involve as many people as possible because I truly believe in the saying, “with me, everybody eats.” That sense of community, combined with professionalism, has been deeply fulfilling and is something I value greatly in my business.

While I’m most known for portraiture, weddings are a regular part of what I do. My work with off-camera flash is something that has gained recognition from professionals in the industry, with whom I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate on various occasions.

What I’m most proud of is the quality of work I’ve been able to produce, particularly this year. The standard and output of my recent projects have made me really happy. In terms of services, Bokeh offers a range of creative solutions—from weddings to portraiture, and even commercial projects. Recently, I led a creative campaign for a startup, Xnote.ai, and the results were fantastic.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
One piece of advice I’d offer is to be as creative as you can, love what you do, and love the things you do for others. In business, it’s easy to get caught up in the mindset that you’re simply working for someone, but it’s essential to always put your best foot forward. Even when you’re hired for a job, treating it as more than just “work” makes a huge difference.

I believe it’s incredibly important to have genuine care for the people you work with and for. Maintaining mutual respect, open communication, and fostering connections is key. The relationships you build are just as important as the work itself. I always say, “Your network is your biggest net worth.” So keep those connections strong, support each other, and rise together.
