Daily Inspiration: Meet Grace Olivia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Olivia.

Hi grace, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started working behind the camera at the end of high school. I didn’t know much, but I knew that documenting moments and creating something out of them stirred a creative side in me I didn’t fully know I had. Over the years I challenged myself to expand my skills through photography, videography, design, and branding. I started photographing live music 3 years ago when I moved to California from Oregon and instantly fell in love. I found myself dreaming about working directly with bands and artists and worked hard towards that dream. I now am the Creative Director for a local indie rock band called Sleeping With Socks On and have also gotten the chance to work with many other artists!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a creative has been surprisingly difficult in many ways, but each frustration I met balanced itself with an outcome that led to growth. I’ve learned so much about myself and my style, how to pioneer and collaborate with others, practicing vulnerability in sharing what I’ve created, and learning the value and impact in what I do. There were many times I wanted to give in to the failures and frustrations – creative teams falling apart, leaving something behind that was once something I ran towards, or hearing I wouldn’t make it. But every time I kept pressing in to my dreams and what God had for me, I found the fuel to keep going to the next level.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in photography, specifically portraits and editorial, but I find myself doing all sorts of work – wedding and music videos, branding and design, creative directing, etc. I would say I’m known for photos and my work with artists and bands – which I am the most passionate and proud of. In being the Creative Director for Sleeping With Socks On, I have done concert photos, band portraits, created brand guides and EP cover art, designed posters and merch, video and more! It’s seriously my favorite thing ever and I hope to continue refining those skills and work with other bands as well. I think what sets me apart from others is the ability to collaborate with other visions that people have and create different styles – rather than having one fine tuned style of work or skill. I’m not perfect in anything but will always strive to create something that means something to someone – whether it’s documenting a wedding or designing something that inspires others – my goal in creating is to see other people dreams come true, bring vision to life, and inspire others to create.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for those starting out is to find people that will not only encourage you but challenge you in your skills and character. Don’t compare your work to others in a negative way but rather let it inspire and challenge you. Don’t let time, money, or fear get in the way. Lock eyes with a dream and work through every up and down until you’re living in the reality of it. Give yourself grace and patience – let the process be what defines you, not the result.
