Giulia Mucciarelli

Hi Giulia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started in Italy, where, as a 90s kid, I had the opportunity to grow up under the loving influence of creativity and beauty that is so ubiquitous in Italian culture. Ever since I can remember, I have been drawn to the art of storytelling. I began to harness this passion through a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Design at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Italy, with two years spent at the University of Liverpool. The seeds of my career in creativity and design were planted.

In 2004, my career in creativity and design started at my father’s small construction company, where I first cut my teeth as a Senior Product Designer. That was the initial step on a journey that saw me taking on more and more responsibility – in the following years, I became Head of Product Marketing, then Head of Brand Marketing, and eventually, I found myself as the Creative Director at my first Creative Agency, MeGwise.

By 2017, I was ready for a fresh challenge and was drawn to the appeal of Silicon Valley. I relocated to California, a place I had admired for years, and landed a role as Director of Global Brand at McAfee Corp. My tenure at McAfee was transformative – we underwent an IPO, worked with the company Executives on projects that touched anything from threat intelligence to quantum computing, and above all, I discovered a profound love for the intersection of creativity and technology.

In 2021, I joined NVIDIA Corporation as their Creative Director. NVIDIA’s dynamic blend of tech innovation and creative prowess was the perfect platform for me to redefine its creative vision and express my passion for art and technology. As the Creative Director, I have led initiatives that saw growth in viewership and media coverage. NVIDIA’sNVIDIA’s relentless pursuit of new ideas and boundary-pushing creativity has kept me driven.

In between my tech projects, the flame that ignited my love for film and storytelling keeps flickering; that’s why I recently embarked on a Directing and Cinematography certificate program at UCLA while continuing to lead creative direction at NVIDIA.

This dual pursuit of my dreams doesn’t come without challenges, but it’s an amalgamation of all my experiences, the love for design and cinema, that has guided my journey so far. Whether crafting an immersive brand experience, leading a dynamic design team, or telling compelling stories through film, my passion for creativity keeps me going.

As I continue to grow as a filmmaker and a creative leader, the experiences I get to make and the people I work with fuel my ambition. As I look to the future, I am excited to explore the convergence of art, technology, and storytelling, creating powerful and immersive experiences. California has been everything I dreamt it would be, and I can’t wait to contribute more to the creative industry and to continue chasing my dream of filmmaking.

Looking at all past experiences and future dreams, from corporate leadership to cinema studies, I am reminded that the path to where we want to go isn’t linear. It’sIt’s full of detours and pit stops that contribute to who we are and where we aim to be.

Every role I’veI’ve held and every experience I’veI’ve garnered has helped shape my creative philosophy and drive my ambition. Each stage of my journey, each company I have been a part of, and each team I have had the privilege to lead, has allowed me to refine my craft, expand my creative boundaries, and deepen my understanding of the relationship between storytelling, design, and technology. These experiences have not only enriched my professional life but have also imparted valuable life lessons that transcend the boundaries of the workspace.

At NVIDIA, I continue to learn and grow. Every project is a new opportunity to explore the fascinating interplay of AI, gaming, and design. The high-pressure environment pushes me to perform better and innovate faster. The immense satisfaction of seeing our projects come to life and the appreciation we receive from our audience make all the hard work worth it.

Parallelly, pursuing my certificate program at UCLA has been exhilarating. Engaging with bright, like-minded individuals and learning from some of the best in the business it’s reignited my passion for filmmaking in ways I didn’t know were possible. It has also allowed me to view my role at NVIDIA through a different lens, enriching both paths.

In retrospect, my journey may seem unconventional, but to me, it’s a testament to the magic that can happen when one follows their passion. It’s a testament to the power of perseverance and the wonderful places it can take us. It’sIt’s a testament to the notion that our dreams can evolve and grow, just like we do.

Today, I’m more excited than ever about the future. I look forward to harnessing my learnings, experiences, and passions to create even more compelling, impactful stories — whether through a brand campaign at NVIDIA or on the silver screen as a filmmaker.

No matter where the road takes me, one thing remains clear: I will forever be a student of creativity, a proponent of bold ideas, and an ardent storyteller. And this journey, which started in Italy and has led me to California, is just the beginning. I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, no road to growth and accomplishment is ever completely smooth, and mine certainly hasn’t been an exception. There have been numerous challenges and hurdles along the way.

Early on, leaving my home in Italy and moving to California was a major step that came with its own set of trials. Adjusting to a new culture, a different work ethic, and missing my roots were all part of the process.

In my professional journey, I have faced the pressure of high expectations, the complexity of team dynamics, and the stress of tight deadlines. I’ve also dealt with the uncertainties that come with leadership roles, from the need to make critical decisions to managing diverse teams and balancing different opinions. The responsibility of delivering high-quality work while constantly innovating and pushing boundaries was a challenge that kept me on my toes.

Perhaps one of the most significant struggles has been managing my dual passions. Pursuing a career in tech while also nurturing my love for storytelling and film has been like walking a tightrope. It was difficult at times to dedicate adequate time and energy to both without compromising either.

Yet, all these challenges have been instrumental in shaping me as a person and as a professional. Each obstacle taught me something valuable and made me more resilient. Every struggle pushed me to work harder, think more creatively, and stay passionate and dedicated to my goals. So, while the road hasn’t been smooth, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The struggles have been a part of my journey, pushing me to grow and shaping the path to where I am now.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a creative leader and filmmaker, I specialize in storytelling that blends the realms of technology, design, and cinema. The unique convergence of these fields sets my work apart and brings a fresh perspective to the projects I undertake.

My portfolio at darkside.design showcases a range of projects that encapsulate my unique approach to storytelling and design.

“Insights,” a Device-to-Cloud Campaign launched at McAfee, aimed to redefine the company’s brand perception. We wanted to transition from being perceived as a consumer antivirus company to a leading device-to-cloud cybersecurity company. The campaign focused on the human effort that fuels technological advancements and how it’s our duty to protect these endeavors from threats. This project challenged us to articulate complex technological concepts in relatable human terms.

I’ve also had the opportunity to work on keynotes for McAfee’s CTO, Steve Grobman. One speech tackled the topic of risk perception in the physical and digital world, underscoring the importance of adopting a data and science-based approach to assess and mitigate risk. These keynotes allowed me to hone my ability to convey complex technological topics to broad audiences.

Another project is “Siliconless.” A selection of my photographs that explored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the fast-paced life of Silicon Valley. The narrative also delves into deeper societal issues prevalent in the Valley, such as homelessness and burnout, raising questions about the future of this tech hub.

In my role as Creative Director at NVIDIA, I’ve worked on various keynotes, including those highlighting the capabilities of Generative AI and its potential to revolutionize industries. The NVIDIA keynote presentations have consistently garnered millions of views and extensive media coverage, signifying our successful engagement with our audience.

My journey into filmmaking, captured in my first short narrative film, “Cyberland,” brought me a sense of personal achievement. Set in a Silicon Valley tech giant’s headquarters, the film narrates a tale of human isolation in the age of AI. This film enabled me to blend my passion for storytelling with my insights into the tech world.

Additionally, my first short documentary, “You Are Not Alone,” it’s been recognized and featured in multiple festivals, including the Lift-Off Global Network New York and the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation, and Technology. This recognition validated my abilities as a filmmaker and storyteller and pushed me to apply for the Directing and Cinematography Certificate at UCLA.

What sets my work apart is the unique blend of my experiences and passions. My background in tech and my love for storytelling and cinema come together to create a distinct creative vision. Whether I’m crafting a brand campaign or directing a film, my aim is to tell compelling stories that resonate with audiences and evoke thoughtful dialogue. I strive to create works that challenge conventions and offer fresh perspectives on the relationship between humans and technology.
