Daily Inspiration: Meet David Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Brown

Hi David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I moved out to Los Angeles to do my doctorate in music at USC. After school, I experimented with an online business to make piano learning accessible. The business didn’t go too far. But in the process, I learned how to film and edit videos. I noticed that many of my social media videos about music started to go viral. In 2023, I changed my approach. I decided to see what would happen if, instead of making elaborate multi-camera videos, I made simple videos from my phone with minimal editing and I more or less gave up on the piano business. The simplification allowed me to start making daily content about music – theory, history, neat instruments from around the world, etc.. The content ballooned to over 200K followers. It’s opened doors for me to speak to important musicians from all around the world and share all things music with an expanding global community. It’s also allowed me to collaborate with businesses – partnerships that allow me to spread the word about their products. My current project is planning a series of live, in-person events.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. My biggest struggle has been finding the time to keep creating regular content and exploring monetization efforts while still working a full-time job at UCLA and being present for my family.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My background is in classical music. I studied music composition, conducting, and piano. But along the way, I became fascinated with music and instruments from different cultures. I spent four years playing Indonesian music in a gamelan ensemble and took private lessons to learn some of the music of North India. One of my biggest surprises has been a growing connection with the music culture of Brazil. Ever since high school, I’ve loved the music of Brazil, though my knowledge was mostly limited to Bossa Nova. In this online journey, many of my videos about Brazilian music have gone viral and it’s deepened my expanding learning and connection to the music of that country.

What were you like growing up?
I was a goofy kid. Bad at sports, not the most hard-working. But I loved music and was fortunate to grow up in a loving household where that pursuit was supported.
