Today we’d like to introduce you to DanceLova Dance Academy.
Hi DanceLova, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ivy Chen began her dance journey at the age of six in Taiwan, where she trained in Russian Vaganova Ballet, Modern, and traditional Chinese dance. Her early passion for movement led her to the National Taiwan University of Arts, the same prestigious academy that produced Oscar-winning director Ang Lee. After graduating, she went on to perform with contemporary and cultural dance companies around the world before joining the Joffrey Ballet School as an instructor and choreographer. With over eighteen years of experience as both a performer and educator, Ivy’s greatest joy has always been sharing her love for dance and mentoring the next generation of artists.
In 2012, Ivy founded DanceLova Dance Academy in Irvine, CA, inspired by her time at Joffrey and encouraged by her partner, Mario, to bring her own creative vision to life. Starting with zero students, Ivy taught every class herself while managing the front desk, accounting, and day-to-day operations. Through passion, dedication, and word of mouth, the studio quickly grew—eventually welcoming nearly 800 students at its peak. Today, DanceLova Dance Academy stands as a thriving community where dancers of all ages are challenged, inspired, and supported. Under Ivy’s artistic direction, the academy has produced award-winning students and continues to nurture dancers who go on to study at top universities and pursue their dreams both on and off the stage.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building DanceLova Dance Academy was far from easy. In the early years, Ivy faced the challenge of introducing the studio to the community, often going door to door around the plaza in Irvine to share her vision and invite families to try a class. The studio’s first recital in 2014 came with its own set of growing pains, as they navigated through an unexpected flood on opening night.
Years later, the pandemic brought another wave of hardship, as the studio lost most of its students and had to transition to virtual classes just to stay afloat. What followed was a long process of rebuilding — from an empty studio to a reenergized dance community that continues to thrive today.
Despite the ups and downs, DanceLova Dance Academy’s journey reflects a story of perseverance. From starting with nothing to becoming one of the most recognized studios in the competitive dance scene, the academy stands as a testament to hard work, adaptability, and an unwavering love for the art of dance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
