Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Scheuerman.
Hi Courtney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started working on this One Woman Show, ‘Holding Court’ a few years ago. It started with actual people from my life, taking real situations and recreating them to tell the story. I had the need for this story to be told. I wanted to bring all the facets of my life together to illustrate that what you see isn’t always the reality of what’s happening on the inside. My journey of learning to love myself and to see myself as the hero of my own story is something I wanted to share because I think it’s something a lot of people struggle with but so rarely talk about.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Putting up the show was a journey in and of itself and as with all journeys, there are going to be bumps along the road and learning to be done. I’d say the biggest obstacle for me in this process was just getting started. I had this idea for the show brewing in my head and heart for years; I would daydream about the characters and blocking, but I couldn’t get myself to make the commitment to put my butt in the chair and get it on paper. I don’t know if this was out of fear or a lack of faith that I could actually make it happen, but I got in my way for the longest time with my inability to just sit down and write the damn thing even though I knew exactly what I wanted to write. However, once I finally started, it poured out of me as if it was writing itself and it did.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a classically trained actress and hold a BA in Theater and Performance Studies from UC Berkeley and I continue my studies as an active member of “The Studio”. I’m also a standup comedian and have been incredibly grateful to have toured the world with my routine, including several comedy tours for our troops overseas.
In terms of acting, I’ve played all sorts of theater roles, everything from Shakespeare to Neil Simon. A few highlights from my theatre career include: being honored by the Pasadena Playhouse with the “Best Actress” Award, nominated for the Irene Ryan Scholarship, and holding the record at the Drama Teachers Association of Southern California Annual Drama Festival with seven first-place finishes in the Monologue Division.
Currently, I’m working in both film and television. You may have seen me in Lionsgate’s ‘Haunted Boat’, ‘Zburbs’ and Nickelodeon’s ‘Life Humongous’ or doing stand-up on NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly, Comedy Central, Oxygen, and Gotham Comedy Live.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Please come out to see ‘HOLDING COURT’ before it heads off to the United Solo Fest in NYC! It’s playing at the Hudson Guild Theatre, which is a great and accessible space that has valet parking and concessions (so all around a good time!). It’s really incredible to see live theatre picking back up after the past two years and I’m grateful that this show gets to be a part of that movement.
