Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Chapple.
Hi Christopher, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up on rural New York State, spirituality and nature held a special allure. I began meditating at age 13 and at 18 began a twelve year training in classical Yoga at Yoga Anand Ashram in Amityville, New York on Long Island. Along the way I earned a BA in Religious Studies and Comparative Literature at Stony Brook University and the M.A. and Ph.D. at Fordham University, specializing in the traditions of Buddhism and Yoga. I joined the faculty of Loyola Marymount University in 1985, founded the Yoga Studies Certificate programs in 2002, and the Master of Arts in 2013.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Many blessings and great teachers along the way have made the path, though rigourous, smooth.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I teach Yoga and meditation in community and academic contexts. I have published more than two dozen books. In December I will be in India promoting a new book, A Sourcebook for Yoga Philosophy and Practice. Last year I published a book called Embodied Ecology: Yoga and Environment. It is a great joy to share these works.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Yoga has been around for a very long time. It has taken new shape and form since the pandemic and the rise of easy-access videos and online learning. Yoga educators continue to adapt to shifts in culture and conversation.
