Daily Inspiration: Meet Brent Bonner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brent Bonner.

Hi Brent, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
There are no rappers where I’m from (Mokena Illinois). I grew up where its very rare to be colored. I was only one of twenty black people in a school with over five hundred kids. Rap was something that made me feel like I was connected to a culture I was always missing out on. While pursuing rap I learned to love music, and though I cant play any instruments, I gained skills in audio engineering which has allowed me to co-found the Eso Collective, eventually connecting me with Voyage LA.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No. No absolutely not. I have been robbed for all that I had, losing years of content and recording gear in the process. I have preformed during the University of Memphis Tiger football games, while simultaneously getting fired from being absent from a minimum wage job. Music is a demanding career and most people don’t fail because they lack skills, but because they want a normal stable life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
While I’m known for skills as a writer with high level word play and conscious narratives, I am truly set apart by my marketing. I created a cartoon, similar to the Gorillaz, called Boy! In the show I clone myself a million times and they all have to learn to coexist. Letting clones of myself “rap for me” has blown open the doors to creativity as I’m allowed to have different brands and styles without confusing my audience.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think being honest with yourself is one of the best qualities of a successful person. When you fail, don’t try and pretend like its what you meant to do, learn what went wrong and do better! My first album sounded amateur, so I went and got a degree in audio engineering. My next project will be a major improvement, which is objectively successful.
