Today we’d like to introduce you to Benedick Suharly.
Hi Benedick, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a barber and grooming artist from Indonesia, and I developed my creative identity through the culture of Los Angeles, where I was immersed in an environment that demanded precision, presence, and elevated detail. My work is rooted in discipline, energy, and the belief that grooming is a powerful form of self-expression. My craft goes beyond just cutting hair because every interaction is an opportunity to shape confidence and leave a lasting impact. I believe that crafting a tailored and thoughtful cut can shift the way someone carries themselves. Through my craftsmanship, I have witnessed real transformation, not only in appearance but in mindset. The conversations I share with each person are just as meaningful as the cut itself. I approach my craft the way an artist approaches a canvas, with rhythm, structure, and intention. It is not only about technique. It is about helping someone feel more aligned with who they truly are. That is the essence of what I create.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the early stages of my journey, one of the biggest challenges I faced was building trust and confidence in myself. I came from a place where no one knew my name or believed in what I was doing. In the beginning, everyone doubted me, including close friends and even family. Regardless of outside opinions, I still held onto the vision I felt was given to me by God. What helped me move forward was learning to build trust with myself by doing the things I said I would do. That is where real confidence came from. It was not about hype or outside approval. It came from discipline, from doing the right things consistently and staying aligned with the person I knew I was meant to become. Over time, that inner trust showed up in how I carried myself, how I created, and how I connected with others. It took time, but that faith and clarity of purpose became the foundation I stand on today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I see grooming as an extension of fashion and as final touch that brings a look together and gives it meaning. When I cut hair, I pay attention to structure, proportion, and texture in the same way a designer approaches tailoring a suit. The shape of a fade, the weight of a fringe, and the taper of a neckline are all decisions that contribute to the overall silhouette and mood. My work has reached a wide range of individuals, including public figures such as NBA player Jared McCain of the Philadelphia 76ers. I have also been part of creative collaborations for private events, where the focus was on bringing together style, presence, and storytelling through grooming. Each experience has pushed me to refine my eye for detail and elevate my understanding of how grooming connects to identity. I want my work to feel intentional and effortless, something that truly belongs to the person wearing it. This is where grooming meets fashion and where identity becomes visual.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My parents deserve the deepest credit for believing in me, even when my path was unclear. Their sacrifices gave me the strength to pursue a vision that many could not see. I also give credit to the mentors and clients who challenged me to grow and raised the standard I hold myself. Watching industry leaders like Tim Cagle and Brady Adams, consistently recognized among the Top 25 in the Top Shot Hair Awards for three years straight, helped shape my eye and sharpen my understanding of the craft. Their work became a reference point for excellence as I taught myself how to elevate every detail. And above all, I give credit to God. None of this came from my strength alone. Every step I have taken has been guided by something greater than me.
