Today we’d like to introduce you to Barry Paschall.
Hi Barry, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off just rapping with my friends for fun. Just trying to say the craziest, funniest thing but still with some artistic integrity. Think Odd Future meets like Sesh Hollow and Lil B. We also had a pretty funny YouTube series called After School Special where we interviewed local artists which got us more involved in the scene. Over time we started to take it more seriously and I started producing, which came somewhat easy because I had some musical background from being in band and some guitar/piano lessons here and there. Eventually I released my album “Idiot.” started performing with a band and also started playing bass for my brother Sockjus’ backing band and the rest was history.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not smooth. Aside from the normal starving artist come up, the biggest challenge was finding balance between dream chasing and real life. Relationships and family, mental health etc. Also starting off as DIY type of artist it can take a while to find a solid sound that works for you. That experimental phase can be kinda crazy
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an all around artist, producer, multi-instrumentalist, audio engineer, and of course a solo artist. I even dabble in film making with my partner Archie. I guess I specialize in live performances.
I would say I’m most known right now for performing with my backing band and being Sock’s bass player.
I’m most proud of my album “Idiot.” even though right now I’m trying to beat it. It’s definitely the best music I’ve ever made in my life so far and the short films we made in promotion for it came out really good. It was a level of execution reached that I had always dreamt of.
I think what sets me apart is not only taste level and open mindedness, but also the ability to be extremely raw and vulnerable in my art.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
At some point I straight up risked all forms of stability to do this art thing. Risk is scary and sometimes you don’t even know if it’s paying off or not but I do think it’s necessary to do something that makes a difference in your life.
