Today we’d like to introduce you to Arielle Moire-Selvage.
Hi Arielle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been singing and making up melodies and songs since I was a toddler. I was born here in Los Angeles and was raised on the Big Island, Hawaii. Growing up in Hawaii gave me a unique upbringing and a deep appreciation for both nature and different cultures. I began pursuing my solo professional music career last year. Previously I both sang and played keys in a band and toured internationally.
I began playing the piano around the age of eight and then couldn’t wait to get my hands on the acoustic guitar. I ended up taking guitar lessons around 12 years old or so. I mostly write and perform on the acoustic guitar, but do enjoy writing on the piano as well. I’m hoping to do some more writing on the ukulele and electric guitar.
I have had the pleasure of performing at some special spots here in LA. I would have to say The Hotel Cafe and The Mint have been my favorite experiences thus far. My goals this year are to keep putting my feelers out for musicians to perform and collaborate with, as well as finishing my debut full-length album at the end of this year.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road by any means. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears have gone into pursuing music. I have had some major struggles with my mental health (a cause I want to get involved with, help bring awareness, and get behind). I lost my wonderful and beautiful mother to cervical cancer about 5 years ago, which was devastating and also life-changing for me. I am also still trying to navigate funding and investing in my music without “drowning” in debt. Financially speaking, it is often a hard road I think for most musicians.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think one of my greatest strengths as an artist is my songwriting skills. I have not had any professional training and never studied it. I think what sets me apart form others is my voice and writing style. I don’t think I really sound like anyone else and don’t want to. I had one musician and family friend say that I remind him of a young Joni Mitchell–that was very flattering and inspiring, as she is such a treasure and talent! Something I am most proud of is my resilience and determination. It may seem like small things for others, but I am proud of my efforts and ability to release music and perform as an independent artist.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
A piece of advise that I have is pretty much showing up and making an effort to meet and support other artists as much as possible. There is an app (probably more like it out there) called Vampr that I have used as well to meet and network with musicians locally and internationally. It helps at times having a professional musician and very much a social butterfly as a father too.
