Today we’d like to introduce you to Aqu♡rius. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Aqu♡rius (pronounced Aquarius) started as a 9-member Love Live Sunshine Cosplay dance group in 2016/2017 to perform outside of Anime Conventions in southern California. Several members decided it would be fun to continue and began to spearhead partnering with conventions performing at Anime Los Angeles, Anime Impulse, and Anime Expo. We continued this path and grew largely known for our Music Video Aqours covers across the globe. After the pandemic, we launched Aqu♡rius Encore Project, a continuation of the group into original idol content. We then started performing non-Love Live songs and released our first original single, “RACKETBALL,” produced by us along with Brandon Chun, in August of 2023. Now, we are working towards our next original group project and hope to perform for many more people outside of Southern California.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Although we share a lot of the happy moments with our followers, it’s not always glitter and ribbons as a self-produced kaigai idol group. We’ve gone through several member changes and identity changes. With multiple members, it’s always difficult to make sure every member’s message and opinions are considered. There are a lot of sacrifices that need to be made to keep the group running as this is largely a completely non-profit passion project. Any support goes straight back into producing content for the group. We are practically completely self-produced. We make our designs, costumes, editing, choreography, and more in addition to our day jobs and school! We’re so happy with all the help that has been given to us by our friends, and without them, Aqu♡rius would not be where it is today.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Many Aqu♡rius members are pursuing higher education and/or are working full-time in their fields of study. A lot of the members are creatives in their everyday lives. Aqu♡rius has members who specialize in vocal training, dance training, graphics, and video within the group’s projects and activities.
I believe what sets us apart from others is our process is our theming, and storytelling within our original performances and within the video content we release online.
What makes you happy?
Being within the idol community and watching how much it has grown in the past 10 years has been a fulfilling part of our journey. We’re all a close bunch that has gone through a lot during our years as cosplay idols and now original idols. It makes us happy that we got to be together on this journey. Lately, creating our original content and having the endless opportunity to make what we want and when we want is freeing.
We can’t wait for what else we can create in the future!
