Daily Inspiration: Meet Alison Rubens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison Rubens.

Hi Alison, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I really fell in love with crafting characters in my high-school drama classes. We studied the classics — Tennessee Williams, Checkov and Shakespeare — and I found I really identified with characters such as Laura Wingfield from The Glass Menagerie.

After high school, I majored in theater arts at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I was fascinated by Theatre of the Oppressed and how acting was used as a mechanism of social change.

I moved back to LA after graduating and have been pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. I continue to take classes to unlock my creativity and have found a love for teaching yoga, which helps keep me physically open for my acting work.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If things were always smooth, life would not be as exciting as it is. I have learned a lot about myself and my love for acting through my struggles. Like everyone searching for their way into acting, I think my biggest struggle is wanting to do creative work and needing to pay bills at the same time. It can be hard to stay the course trying to balance those competing interests, especially when you hear ‘no’ a lot. I’ve learned a lot about persistence — I’m still here because I love performing and bringing scripts to life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an actress and I love telling stories. I love bringing stories to life and I love to bring elements of creativity to them to allow the audience to reflect and feel in a way that they didn’t expect. Stories allow us to celebrate our differences and also our similarities. It allows us to travel to different places, different times, and different worlds. The deepest stories and performances are a catalyst for people to laugh, cry, reflect, and feel. I have always known that I wanted to be part of that form of art. To be part of living, moving, electrifying artistic storytelling. I think I’m known for being naturally funny. For being goofy but also being genuine in my work.

How do you think about luck?
I can not say that I believe in luck as much as I believe in hard work. However, I do believe that my life journey has taken me on this path for a certain reason. I believe that I am incredibly lucky to have found the studio where I take classes right now because it has allowed me to study and develop my creative process of channeling a character physically, really allowing me to embody the character. It has been a journey and succession of taking different classes in Los Angeles and talking to the right people to lead me to this particular class.
