Daily Inspiration: Meet Ali Futrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Futrell

Hi Ali, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve never questioned why I create—art is simply who I am. Art has always been an extension of me, something I’ve never second-guessed. That passion led me to the San Francisco Art Institute, where I earned my BFA in Painting with a minor in Design and Technology. I’ve always believed that everything unfolds as it’s meant to, and I embrace the idea that “there is no path—paths are made by walking.”

I wouldn’t be where I am today without the endless support of my family and friends. My family has never doubted me—not for a second. I feel fortunate to have grown up in a family of artists. Knowing I’ve had people in my corner, encouraging me to keep going, to trust in myself, has made all the difference.

I first started selling my work at local street and craft fairs, doing henna body art and creating a line of hand-painted clothing and apothecary goods. My first commissioned mural, made possible by the late Katy Shardt, sparked a career that has since expanded to over 35 murals across California and nationwide!

Beyond murals, for the last 7 years I’ve hosted private and public paint-and-sip events with venues like Zinqué, Soho, Greenleaf, Universal Studios, and The Trade Desk. These events are more than just painting—they offer connection, self-expression, and a welcomed space for creativity.

In my studio, I work on commissions, canvases, and personal projects, always exploring new ideas. Right now, I’m focused on expanding paint and sip events, taking on larger mural projects, and developing digital products that make art more accessible. Looking ahead, my work will continue to evolve, always rooted in creativity, connection, and the belief that art transforms both spaces and minds.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any path, there have been challenges along the way. One of the biggest struggles has been finding the right studio space, somewhere that not only accommodates my needs but also inspires me creatively. Working on a large scale has always been a passion of mine, but at times, I’ve had to adjust and work smaller due to space limitations, which can be both frustrating and an opportunity for creative adaptation.

Another major challenge has been balancing the business side of being an artist. All I want to do is create, but in order to grow and find success, I’ve had to teach myself discipline when it comes to managing finances, marketing, client communications, and all the logistical aspects of running a business. Learning to navigate that while staying true to my artistic vision has been a continuous process, but one that has ultimately made me a stronger, more well-rounded artist and entrepreneur.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At my core, I am a painter, a muralist, and a creative who believes in the transformative power of art. I specialize in large-scale murals, commissioned paintings, and interactive paint-and-sip experiences, all with the intention of bringing art into people’s lives in a meaningful way. I’ve worked with residential and commercial clients, painting murals for brands like 7-Eleven, Bev Canned Wine, Nosotros Tequila, Creamy Boys, Airbnb, Verizon, and MVMT, among others. In addition to my public art, I also create custom commissioned paintings in my studio.

My mission is to create meaningful art and inspire others to do the same, promoting the benefits of both viewing art and experiencing the creative process. Art has the power to heal, to inspire, and to bring people together, and I want to display that in the work I do. Whether it’s a mural transforming a space, a painting finding its home, or someone picking up a paintbrush at one of my paint-and-sip events, I want people to experience the joy, freedom, and healing that comes from making with art.

What sets my work apart is the energy and intention behind it. My style is expressive, childlike, and raw using vibrant colors and shapes from nature. My approach as of lately is about embracing imperfection and the beauty of the process itself, allowing creativity to flow freely without judgment.

One of the things I am most proud of is the unwavering support I’ve had from my family and friends. They have always believed in me, and that belief has fueled my success. Having people in my life who trust my vision and encourage me to keep going has been invaluable. It’s that same kind of encouragement that I aim to pass on through my work—to show people that creativity is for everyone and that art has the ability to enrich our lives in ways we may not even realize.

What does success mean to you?
For me, success is about feeling a deep sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. It’s about waking up every day knowing that I am doing what I love: creating, inspiring, and sharing art with others.

Success is found in meaningful moments, the connections made through my work, the impact a painting has on someone, the joy and healing that art brings to those who engage with it. It’s in the freedom to create without limitations, to follow my instincts, and to trust the process. To me, true success is a life full of creativity, purpose, and connection, where I am constantly growing, evolving, and sharing my vision with the world.
