Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Justin Gonzales.
Hi Alexander Justin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my film journey in Austin, Texas. A friend offered me a PA position on a low budget film and I took it without any questions asked. I had a blast onset! I knew I needed to work in film from that point on. As I made my way from one part time job to another I got lucky and was asked to be in other friends films. It catapulted, one thing led to another, and BOOM there I was moving to Los Angeles. After being a part of many projects- I found my niche: Producing. I knew I had to write and story tell my own work/ specifically lgbt film.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My Work… Film making-CAMP Millennial GOLD! I love! wink wink xoxo. Let’s Be Gay. So Me. Okay. How bout this… I’m known for thick thighs, saving lives, quick remarks, smart mouthed puns and skipping into fairylands. JK but partially not. When I think of what I create, it has to tie into something I’ve experienced or draw near to. Lately that’s coping with depression, anxiety, loss, and heartbreak. Mind you delivery and style are a huge element in my film making. I am most in love and inspired by John Waters. I love CAMP! I intend to push it to the forefront of cinema. No one can be Divine, Edith Massey, or Mink Stole. We need our icons back!
In my film making, I appreciate extreme choices – puns, dry humor, over the top aesthetic. Some might say they hate camp, and to them I say what my idol John Waters coined “Contemporary art hates you.” My approach to storytelling, my art direction and overall spunk is what I believe sets me apart from the rest. I think adding conscious diversity and experience in all I produce is necessary to my entire process. I was never here to make action-packed bro films or rom coms for TV. I know my subtle camp and work great under extreme limited budgets and resources. Delivery is everything and pivotal to my camp storytelling. I am most proud of my incredible team of fellow artists and filmmakers. Nothing feels better than creating with your friends!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
To finish a film especially a feature-length, you need discipline. Discipline with your savings, discipline in your determination to complete all aspects of post-production, and discipline in your frame of mind to be open to all that comes along the way.
