Today we’d like to introduce you to Aizhou Liu. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Aizhou Liu is a New York City-based multi-genre composer, songwriter, and audio technologist. Beijing-born and Shanghai-raised, Aizhou writes music fused between traditional Chinese and modern Western culture. She is known for her bilingual upbeat pop tracks and dramatic hybrid underscores. She is the first and twice the recipient of Genelec/AES’ Audio Pioneering Award for Outstanding Women. She is constantly looking for new collaborators in the areas of film/tv, games, and virtual reality.
Aizhou is also engaged in cutting-edge audio research at New York University. She is currently working as the sound designer and audio programmer at Future Reality Lab in collaboration with Holodeck where she designs sound assets and implements them into games and virtual reality products.
Aizhou is an alumna of Berklee College of Music (BM) and is currently pursuing her Master’s at New York University (graduating in Dec 2022).
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think challenges are inevitable and also the most fun part of a creative career when you look back at your path, and for me, it is no exception. Being an Asian female in the entertainment industry, I fight for change every day within my communities for more transparency and exposure. I am often boxed into whom I should be creatively based on my heritage and looks- actress, model, singer. But guess what, we can be a multitude of things all at the same time, and for me, that would be a musician, creator, leader, and entrepreneur.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I primarily work in the field of film/tv, video games, and VR as a composer and singer-songwriter. I write music in a variety of styles and influences: orchestral, pop, electronic, etc. I bring my Chinese heritage and influences to my music and I also sing in Mandarin. One of my career goals is to make Chinese music accessible to a global audience, meaning making them contemporary and relevant to all ages and demographics. We live in an age of international cultural exchange and it’s always important to me to be in touch with my roots.
On the film scoring side, I had been fortunate to work with National Geographic on the 2022 SharkFest Special Game of Sharks which premiered on ESPN and the National Geographic channel! It had been a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience to work with Nat Geo’s amazing team. Look forward to more collaborations with them.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
No collaboration is too small! Collaboration is my favorite thing when it comes to art and I would love to work with more like-minded creative minds, whatever field you work in.
