Daily Inspiration: Meet Aimee Barbeau

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aimee Barbeau

Aimee, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Aimee Barbeau and I have been creating art since I was four years old. This was something that I naturally gravitated to because the visual arts and the act of creating, greatly appealed to me as a child. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art at California State University, Northridge in 2016 and have since been teaching myself realistic portrait painting.

I am currently in the middle of my practice, trying to develop a unique body of work that resonates with audiences from around the world. My goal is to weave beautiful story telling about individuals, particularly women of all backgrounds. For the past five years I have worked on sharpening my realism portrait skills I am currently developing my skills in story telling and composition.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A personal struggle for me was not discovering my art style and who I was as an artist during college. After graduation, it took me a couple of years to fully get back into the art world and dive into painting again. Starting from scratch was the best thing that I could have done for myself because it allowed me to take my time in discovering what I wanted to create.

After discovering that I loved portrait painting, the next challenge was to figure out how I was to achieve realism in my work. After many years of studying and creating practice pieces, I was able to master my realism skills.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create contemporary realism oil paintings of women. I am known for my realistic skills and capturing a person’s likeness and essence. I create paintings of women through unique compositions which includes elements of nature, symbolism and beautiful color palettes depending on the message of the piece. My upcoming body of work will focus on the modern day woman, beauty, spirituality, nature and how all of this combines into one.

I am most proud of the fact that my work includes women of all ethnicities, backgrounds and race. What sets me apart from others is that I want to include everyone, no matter where they come from, into my work because there is a beauty in representing that inclusion. I am also very proud that the representation of women is a strong factor in my work.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very shy kid. Staying silent and still for me, was more enjoyable than being loud, active and excited. Activities such as reading, creating arts and crafts, and playing with my twin sister was the highlight of my day.
