Conversations with Zer Alon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zer Alon.

Hi Zer , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I was young, I have always been interested in people and helping them with their struggles. Science and philosophy were fascinating to me, so when it came time to pursue a career, becoming a psychologist seemed like a wonderful combination of both intellectual pursuit and making a real difference in people’s lives.

After earning a doctoral degree in psychology and completing a postdoctoral fellowship, I worked in college counseling at both UCLA and UCI. I later started a full-time private practice where I provide individual and couples therapy, helping them to heal and thrive.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I regularly meet with colleagues in a consultation group to help me problem-solve and brainstorm ways of supporting my clients. There is so much to learn from the knowledge and experience of others who are doing similar work. Some of the most helpful feedback I receive comes from my clients themselves. Not everything works for everybody in the same way, so having a flexible and adaptive approach, really emphasizing what works for each individual and couple can make all the difference. Regularly attending trainings, conferences, and independent study is also vital. I’m always on the lookout for new ideas and thinking about what I can bring into sessions to help my clients.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My psychology practice specializes in providing individual and couples counseling for adults, utilizing a combination of modern therapy and wellness in an embracing environment. I work with many types of clients and can help with anxiety and depression, create balance during transitions, understand personal struggles, and increase self-esteem and self-compassion. By developing a collaborative working relationship, I customize treatment based on each client’s individual needs.

I help couples work on communication issues, increase their emotional connection, and help clients strengthen their relationships with empathy and understanding. It is wonderful to see couples reconnect their love for each other, which has the amazing effect of positively impacting everyone in their lives.

I use an integration of several evidence-based therapeutic approaches with clients to helping them to achieve their goals.
I am also sensitive to issues of diversity, culture, and identity and how they influence people and their concerns.

How do you define success?
My definition of success is when people are able to make meaningful changes in their lives. When they are able to break through issues that have been holding them back—whether it’s improving an important relationship, overcoming a personal difficulty that they’ve been struggling with, or making important strides on their goals and overall mental health. Providing hope and encouragement can go a long way in helping someone on their road toward recovery and healing.
