Conversations with Yvonne Toney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Toney.

Yvonne Toney

Hi Yvonne, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The Cotton Seed Creative opened its doors in September 2019. Five months the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Prior to this, I worked as a consumer affairs analyst for Hyundai Motor America Corporate office. I’m a military combat vet serving in Operation Enduring Freedom. Earning the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal as well as the National Defense Medal. Since a child creativity, music and culture has been a part of my life.

I would make things, re-purpose things and most recently, created various crystal canvas art. The Cotton Seed has strived to not only be a place that sells art and cool products but a place of collaboration and freedom to be unique.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road as five months later after opening COVID affected the normal way of life, shopping, and doing things. We spent our first two years riding that wave. Since then we have re-located and getting our groove where we would like it to be.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As far as my work, it’s definitely multi-faceted! I designed and created the location, I run the shop’s events, collaborations, and artist and vendor curation. I’m the creative director for all of my projects including the launch and feel of certain campaigns, in-house major events, and the feel of it all. I am also a hands-on creative enjoying using canvas, spray paint, and crystal to create unique pieces that showcase a brand, slogan, feel or mantra.

What matters most to you?
People matter the most. Doing what I can to help others with what I have. What also matters is the feel of things. The right collaborations, art, and campaigns. Making sure it all aligns with what I enjoy and what fits the vibe of the total scope of things.
