Today we’d like to introduce you to Yanming Chen.
Hi Yanming, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My path into the world of design took an unexpected turn. During my early years, I never envisioned a career in design, but my curiosity grew as I noticed how intricate design elements seamlessly blend into our daily lives, from traffic signals to eye-catching neon signs and captivating promotional ads to the immersive world of cinema. Unlike traditional art, commercial and entertainment designs struck me as essential aspects of our existence.
As I delved deeper, I began to see design as a fusion of emotions and logic, where the creator’s sentiments intertwine with commercial objectives. This realization, coupled with my fascination for the power of visual storytelling, eventually led me to choose a path in UI/UX and Graphic Design.
Over the years, I dedicated myself to refining my skills and exploring various design facets, from typography and color theory to user psychology and brand identity creation. My commitment to learning, staying updated with industry trends, and pushing the boundaries of my creativity remained unwavering.
As a UI/UX and Graphic Designer, I played a crucial role in product development and brand communication. My focus was on conceiving and implementing design solutions that enhanced user experiences while effectively representing our brand. I bridged the gap between users and our educational tools, ensuring that our visual communication resonated with the target audience.
Through unwavering dedication and a relentless passion for design, I established myself in the field. I take immense joy in creating designs that leave a lasting impact, crafting immersive brand experiences through innovative design strategies. For me, design is a powerful platform for sharing emotions, telling stories, and making a positive impact on the world. This belief has guided my journey and continues to inspire my future endeavors in the ever-evolving realm of design.
Today, I am proud of the mark I’ve made in the industry, but I see it as only the beginning. The world of design is dynamic, and I am excited to keep learning, growing, and contributing to this ever-changing landscape.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey to where I stand today has been a rewarding yet challenging adventure. Like any creative pursuit, a career in design is filled with hurdles and obstacles that put one’s resilience and determination to the test.
One of the initial struggles I faced was grappling with the steep learning curve of mastering various design tools and principles. Understanding the intricacies of UI/UX design, delving into user psychology, and exploring the art of visual storytelling demanded immense time and effort. It was a demanding process that required countless hours of practice and continuous learning. I adopted an approach of diving in first before feeling overwhelmed by the study list. Taking action and getting hands-on experience made the learning journey much smoother, and glancing at the subject helped me set clearer study goals.
Furthermore, finding the right balance between creativity and commercial objectives was another unique challenge. Crafting designs that connect emotionally with users while achieving strategic business goals is a complex task. I had to strike a delicate equilibrium, tapping into my creative instincts while also considering practicality and functionality in my designs. This often led to creative blocks, a common phenomenon in the creative industry. Fresh ideas seemed elusive, making the design process feel daunting and overwhelming. The good thing is that I discovered solutions by taking breaks and living in the moment.
Each struggle became an opportunity for growth and learning. I embraced these challenges to sharpen my skills, refine my design process, and deepen my understanding of user needs and market trends. I learned the value of resilience and adaptability, constantly pushing myself to evolve and improve.
In hindsight, these challenges have played a pivotal role in shaping my career and fostering my professional growth. While the journey hasn’t always been smooth, I firmly believe that the struggles along the way have contributed significantly to my success as a designer.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a UI/UX and Graphic Designer, my work revolves around harnessing the transformative power of design to create compelling visual narratives and intuitive user interfaces. My specialization lies in developing user-centered designs that seamlessly blend aesthetics with functionality, resulting in an immersive and enjoyable user experience. What sets me apart in my field is my unique design philosophy, which balances emotional resonance with pragmatic objectives. I appreciate the role of design in evoking emotions and forging connections, but I also understand its practical purpose. This approach ensures that my designs not only look good but also perform well.
One of the projects I take immense pride in is the innovative educational tool I designed. This tool not only facilitated a smoother learning experience but also cultivated an engaging and interactive environment. It was a testament to the power of design in shaping user behavior and contributing to educational success.
Approaching every project with a holistic perspective, I consider the user journey, business goals, and brand identity, creating harmonious designs that enhance the overall user experience and contribute to the project’s success. My commitment to continuous learning, staying up-to-date with industry trends, and pushing creative boundaries empowers me to produce designs that leave a lasting impact. I believe in harnessing design to tell compelling stories, evoke emotions, and forge profound connections, resulting in meaningful and visually stunning experiences that leave an indelible impression.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
In my profession, I rely on essential tools such as Figma and the Adobe Creative Suite for interface and graphic design. To deepen my understanding of user-centered design principles, I consider ‘The Design of Everyday Things’ by Don Norman a cornerstone in my literature collection. Additionally, ‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’ by Daniel Kahneman has enriched my comprehension of cognitive processes and decision-making, which indirectly affects user behavior.
To stay updated with current design discourse, I regularly engage with the Design section on Medium and draw inspiration from creative projects shared on Behance and Dribbble. For continuous learning and knowledge enhancement, online platforms like Coursera and Udemy offer a variety of design courses across different topics. Additionally, the Nielsen Norman Group’s website serves as a key reference point for UX research and best practices.
Each of these resources significantly contributes to my professional development, allowing me to continually refine my skills, stay abreast of industry trends, and fuel my creative process. By leveraging these valuable resources, I ensure that my work remains innovative and aligned with the latest advancements in the design field.
