Conversations with Xiaoqi Zhou

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xiaoqi Zhou.

Xiaoqi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I told my story many times before, it was not until this year where I truly feel I accumulated meaningful, unforgettable snapshots of my life over to share with the world, once again.

I haven’t been able to visit my family back in China since the pandemic, and the best of what I had absorbed during these solitary days is what I have devoted to music, to audio. It’s quite natural for me to turn inwardly when the world shut down, and as it should I have turned completely to creating new music, shaping my sounds as a producer, singer-songwriter, mixer. I think in so much effort I put in and so much fun time spent with music, I was able to see myself clearer than before.

Upon the release of my debut album ‘Homegrown’ written, performed, produced, mixed, and mastered by me (aka Soulgood Kid) ‘Homegrown’ is truly an intimate piece of art that allows the listener to peek into my vivid inner world.

It never feels like once I put out something then the mission is done, for my music the end of a cycle is always the beginning.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Well, struggles are what made me who I am now, I wouldn’t be here without overcoming hurdles. A tough one to call out was when I first started out as an independent artist without equipping enough knowledge on branding and promoting, it was not easy getting my music out there back then. Good things take time, grateful to be where I am now.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an independent artist, I always put this title first because it defines me the most out of all the roles I play in music. I’m also a music producer, singer-songwriter and a mixing engineer.

To people, I’m known for being ‘Soulgood Kid,’ my solo music project that I’m most proud of. I take full control both in front and behind the creative curtain of ‘Soulgood Kid,’ every song is written, performed, produced, mixed and mastered by me. It’s a feeling hard to describe when something so personal yet wanting to be heard are created, and their existence constantly remind me of what I’m capable of doing musically and artistically. When what I sing is what I wrote, and listening to all the sounds playing in harmony, it hits differently.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m always open for opportunities working with great people, collaborating with other passionate souls out there!

I provide services across the spectrum of audio including songwriting, music production, recording session, mixing and mastering. Also for films, commercials and short clips of any kind I do post-production, sound design, foley and more!
