Today we’d like to introduce you to William Scales.
Hi William, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Entertainment was in my blood from a young age. Born and raised in Compton/Lynwood, California, being creative has always been something I’ve inspired to be. From singing in church and school choirs, doing stage management in high school and dance, I’ve always had a passion for entertainment. After high school, I had the chance to work as a club promoter, which gained me multiple jobs in marketing at various record labels. Being in those doors gave me access to multiple opportunities, in which I landed a job with Lynn Allen Jeter & Associates as a Jr. Publicist. Here is where I pick up a camera and the journey began. While shooting red carpets, celebrities and other star-studded events, the passion began.
This is where I started to tell “My stories”. I flipped that switch on my camera from photo to video and I started to document what I felt. What people felt. That you are not alone. Stories needed to be told. And I totally fell in love with it. Today, I’m very satisfied. There is a saying I have. ‘Comfortable and wealth is not a dollar sign.” As long as you are happy and you wake up doing what you love everyday. You’re thankful. It’s not about test, it’s the testimony.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would say…Being my “Worst” enemy.
I’m a perfectionist at heart and that usually becomes a roadblock. Mistakes are part of the learning process, but sometimes it can delay the process. Most of the time, everyone around me ensures me that it’s fine. But I’m always double checking for anything. It’s just that I’m passionate of what I do. I’ve gotten better at it though…lol
Also fitting in and being liked can also be a challenge. This industry can be rough and cut throat at times. Especially in the Black Hollywood community. You can get caught up very fast. I’ve learn to always protect my mental peace and stay true to yourself. We have to protect our image and/or brand. And that’s when some tend to get off course. Changes are apart of life. But when you get an asterisk next to your name, it’s hard to remove. Stay humble, take ownership, communicate and grow.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
People would say that I’m a “Jack of All Trades”.
Scales Media is one of my brands I am proud of. It’s where I get to show my passion of photography, videography and graphics design. For over 20 years, I’ve been able to capture or create precious and memorable moments for clients that are lifetime and everlasting. Either through writing, filming or photography, I’m proud to see my vision come to light. It’s the same with my DJ career. Storytelling is still an aspect. To set the tone in a building, regardless of someone having a good or bad day. My creativity is able to change someone’s mood, soul or feeling I’m known to be able to read people and bring the best out of them.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Be visible. Ask question. Be willing to learn. For me, if I see anyone that has a true desire to learn, I’m always available to give advice or teach. Any photoshoot, film set or Dj set I’ve done, it’s always open to anyone who really wants to invest and learn. That’ how I was taught. I was the first one to arrive and the last one to leave. It made people ask “Who is he?”. The right people always saw me and started to now ask me questions. As I sat by and soaked up as much knowledge as I could.
