Conversations with Weiming Wang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Weiming Wang

Hi Weiming, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m an LA-based, award-winning director and producer, known for my unconventional approach to storytelling and filmmaking. My journey began with a passion for exploring new formats, which led me to embrace vertical filmmaking. However, my story isn’t just about pushing the boundaries of visual format; it’s also about challenging traditional approaches to acting and performance. I’ve been fortunate enough to showcase my work at international festivals, with my latest directorial effort, Love to Phallus (2023), being selected at festivals like the Dumbo Film Festival and the European Shorts Awards. My debut film in North America, Accompany (2022), earned me the First-Time Director Award at the Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de Madrid, which helped propel me into the international film scene. Today, I continue to pioneer new ways of storytelling and talent cultivation, especially through my directing studio, which offers a platform for unconventional actors to thrive in an experimental, unstructured environment.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. The transition from traditional filmmaking to vertical storytelling was met with a lot of skepticism. Early on, people dismissed it as “social media content,” not seeing its potential as a serious narrative format. I also had to rethink everything—from camera angles to pacing—because vertical filmmaking requires an entirely new visual approach. However, the challenges have been a driving force for my creativity. I’ve experimented with new techniques and developed a unique style that has set me apart in the industry. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of receiving international recognition, but I’m still constantly evolving and pushing boundaries, especially in performance-driven storytelling.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in vertical filmmaking, an innovative storytelling format that’s reshaping the way we experience narratives in the digital age. I’m known for pushing the boundaries of traditional filmmaking by adapting to mobile-first platforms, creating immersive and engaging content that resonates with modern audiences. What sets me apart is my ability to blend creativity with analytics—using audience insights to refine my projects and ensure both artistic depth and commercial success. I’m most proud of my recent project, The Affair Zone, which has become a major success on the Vigloo platform, staying at #1 for multiple weeks. What really excites me is the opportunity to elevate vertical filmmaking as a legitimate cinematic medium, proving it’s not just a passing trend but a transformative force for storytelling.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can collaborate with me in various ways, whether through joint projects, brand collaborations, or creative partnerships. I’m always open to working with filmmakers, creatives, and brands who are interested in exploring the potential of vertical storytelling and pushing the boundaries of digital media. Additionally, those looking to support my work can follow and engage with my projects, share feedback, or connect me with platforms and networks that align with the future of vertical filmmaking. I’m also open to mentorship and offering creative guidance to up-and-coming filmmakers who want to dive into this unique format. The more we embrace vertical storytelling, the more we can shape the future of modern cinema together.
