Conversations with Wangjie Li

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wangjie Li.

Hi Wangjie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always loved telling stories through images, and that passion eventually led me into concept design, where imagination turns into living worlds and characters.

After years of study and collaboration, I’ve built a career creating visuals for games and entertainment projects. I focus on mood, storytelling, and the connection between design and emotion, trying to make each piece feel alive and believable even in a world that exists only on screen.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been very fortunate to receive help and support from many people along my career, and I’m grateful to be part of a community that values creativity and collaboration. Still, the journey hasn’t always been easy. As an immigrant artist, I’ve faced challenges adapting to a new environment while navigating the uncertainties of the game industry, especially during times of large-scale layoffs.

Working mostly from home also brings its own struggles — the isolation, the quiet stretches that test your motivation. Life has its ups and downs, and like many artists, I’ve had to learn how to manage anxiety and stay grounded through it all.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as a Senior Concept Artist in the game and entertainment industry, focusing on creating key visuals, characters, and cinematic scenes. My job is to help shape the visual tone of a story, from the lighting and composition to the details that make a world feel real.

What I love most is finding that balance between design and storytelling. To me, a strong image isn’t just about how it looks; it’s about what it makes you feel. I try to bring that emotional connection into everything I create.

What makes my work a bit different is that I often apply traditional painting techniques, especially from oil painting, to my digital process. I believe the limitations and textures found in traditional media can bring a unique sense of beauty and depth to digital art, giving it a more natural and timeless feel.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned that growth often happens in the uncertain moments, not just when things go well. Staying curious and consistent matters more than chasing perfection. That’s what keeps me grounded and still excited to create.
