Conversations with Uhoman Moltok

Today we’d like to introduce you to Uhoman Moltok.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Abuja, Nigeria and moved to the States in 2019 when I fell in love with film. At 19, I started making short films with friends, family and really anyone who was willing to stand in front of my little camera. It was all very fun with little planning. In 2022, I got accepted into USC’s School of Cinematic Arts where I am currently getting my MFA in Film and Television Production. My thesis film, “Wasabi” will be premiering in a few days. It is the 8th short film that I have directed.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
How boring it would be to live a life with no struggle. It goes against the nature of a good story and I am all for good storytelling. I think the major struggle though would be living so far away from my family. I try to visit them as often as I can to reconnect with my culture and remind myself of what really matters.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am primarily an artist and filmmaker. Stories about women is what I specialize in. I am very passionate about women and their rights. How they view the world and exist in it. All my works have to do with women and their experiences.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love LA. Everyone’s house is designed uniquely and the food is great. I only wish the public transportation was safer and more reliable.
