Conversations with Tom Loerch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Loerch.

Hi Tom, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
To keep it short – I started out studying architecture in school, leaving to pursue writing, then, by chance, becoming friends with a group of graphic designers/artists, which inevitably lead to my delving into 3D animation. As of now, I have a short film and a few other projects in the works ready to be shown to the world sometime early 2023.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Bouncing around career trajectories is never easy or smooth. Teaching oneself 3D animation during a global pandemic is slightly easier but not quite what I would call part of a smooth road. Although, I am aware that both of those issues are fairly benign in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make 3d animated films that are adult in nature. I believe that sets me apart (for the most part) as is. My influences are not of the animated variety, which is fairly unusual, but are generally live-action filmmakers or authors – Roy Andersson, Charlie Kaufman, Thomas Pynchon, and Thomas Bernhard, to name just a few. I’d throw in David Lynch and Lars Von Trier just to be safe. Can’t forget the Coen Brothers, of course. Kafka. William H Gass. Etc. etc.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Inspiration is a word that gets thrown around often, but I wouldn’t rely on it as an artist. Instead, I’d treat it as what it is – work – wake up every day, have your coffee, and just get what needs to be done, done.
