Today we’d like to introduce you to Tania Solomon
Hi Tania, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had always sung but initially went to art school to be a painter. I ended up with a degree in Comparative Literature before I finally decided on opera as my career. I went back to school for music and voice but eventually chose to study privately. I have been singing opera for 35 years now. I first started teaching about 30 years ago just because someone asked me for lessons. I wasn’t even sure I was qualified and I kind of asked my Voice Teacher for permission! After that I worked at a music school and continued to teach privately while pursuing my operatic career. After my divorce, I dedicated myself to teaching full time. I feel really privileged to have taught thousands of lessons and helped people of all ages and walks of life learn how to sing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Hmmm, smooth? Maybe. I have been fortunate to have a steady flow of students who seek me out. But the road has been twisty for sure. I think the biggest challenges I faced were cancer treatment in 2019 followed by the lockdown in 2020. I continued to teach throughout chemotherapy, surgeries and radiation but I couldn’t really expand my business. I just didn’t have the energy. I’m very blessed to be cancer free now. In 2020, there were no in-person lessons so everything came to a dead stop. I offered online lessons but had no takers. Everyone thought it was going to last a few weeks! By about August, I had people reaching out asking for the same online lessons they had turned down earlier. I did some research and overcame the technical hurdles. Now I teach all over the world via Zoom. It’s amazing to have access to all these wonderful people!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I teach folks to sing. I basically have two populations I serve: professional singers and other sorts of professionals who love singing as a hobby. As a professional opera singer, I worked long and hard on all aspects of singing. I developed an exhaustive knowledge of vocal technique, a rich process for uncovering expressive performance and pretty infallible ears. It’s funny, I never really thought about developing great ears; it just happened along the way. My ability to listen closely, diagnose an issue correctly and give clear and concise solutions is definitely a valuable asset. I always say half my fee is just access to my ears! But I think I’m probably most proud of the mindset work I do with my students. Many people come to me after years of study with other teachers. Usually there is some small tweak in their technique, but a pretty big mindset shift. I’m also really proud to see my students following their passions. Whether it’s karaoke or a Dad band or finally performing at their peak, my heart just bursts to know I had a hand in getting them there. Singing is a tremendous gift. I think something that sets me apart from other Voice Teachers is my own extensive experience. Being an opera singer, I spent 20 years studying with world class teachers and coaches. The funny thing is, I mostly teach pop, rock, jazz and musical theater singers. Bel canto technique is the finest there is and it is surprisingly adaptable to any style because it’s based on healthy vocal function and optimal resonance. It feels like magic every time someone’s authentic voice emerges because we have released the tension that was in the way. I truly love my job.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
When I was a little girl, my grandmother had season tickets to the playhouse where all the touring companies would come. She had two front row center seats. We would get all dressed up and see amazing shows and Broadway stars. I loved being so close to the action. It made me feel like I was part of it. I think that may have lit a fire under me. That, and the fact my Mom was an actress. I just loved the theater and I still do.
