Conversations with Tam To

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tam To

Hi Tam, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a foodie for as long as I can remember. My hobby would be trying a new restaurant or meal every week, so I really got to know the LA area and the food it offers. A lot of my friends/visitors would ask me for recommendations, so I started social media to share those places. Over time, the account grew and I was able to try and share even more places as well as meet other foodies along the way! I’ve pivoted to more hidden gems now since it brings me happiness seeing those places do well after getting recognition on social media. Now I enjoy cooking and experimenting with recipes since I’ve tried a lot of different food in the past few years. I currently work full-time and social media remains as a hobby that I really enjoy doing!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road! Social media is basically like another full time. You have to constantly get content, edit, script, post, and plan for the next one. I started getting burnt out accepting all invites or offers, but I learned that I should only do what I enjoy doing rather than forcing any type of content. I have figured out the workflow better now so I try to do what makes me happy without feeling overwhelmed. I’ve also felt embarrassed about what I put online–but it’s just something to get used to!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I used to be a scientist, so I was in molecular biology research. I found greater joy in marketing and storytelling, so I pivoted into that field instead. I’ve been getting used to the transition, but I’ve learned a lot along the way. I’m most proud of making scientific discoveries and being able to see that data be used for even greater discoveries. I’m also proud of my marketing skills in getting stories to reach a broader audience. My background is definitely a blend of things, but it’s made me who I am today. Marketing and science may seem different, but they both involve experimentation, data-driven analytics, and visual storytelling!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Consistency is key, but it’s never worth it to sacrifice quality over quantity. It’s ok to say no and just do what makes you happy. Don’t compromise the quality or joy of your work just because someone is offering a free meal or free product. Don’t lose your voice and create great work that you feel proud of. Don’t make content for others, but rather for yourself.
