Today we’d like to introduce you to Sumner Stroh.
Sumner, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Sumner Stroh. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin I was all set to go to law school but I couldn’t quiet the little voice in my head saying “its now or never” to pursue my lifelong dream to become a musician. My parents, rightfully so, had their jaws on the floor. That was three years ago. I am now working on my debut album and have four songs in my catalogue. It’s been a wild ride, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. I fear I have hit every road block in what has been a bumpy ride. But Im so grateful for the bumps. I would not be the person I am today if I did not learn the lessons I have along the way. In order to make a career out of singing, you really have to love it. Being a Texas girl, I had this sort of blind faith that everyone meant what they said and meant well. Man, was I wrong. Somehow, I still find myself having that blind faith. Instead of changing my perception of people Ive changed the way I go about navigating the music industry and ensuring I have the proper protections in place to ensure my own safety and to ensure that I retain the rights to everything. Ive stayed true to the fact that as long as I still have a dream, no matter what happens, no one can take that spark from me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Im a singer, producer, songwriter, and musician. I came to Los Angeles with my voice as the only instrument I could ‘play.’ Im so proud of how far Ive come developing my sound, my craft, and most importantly – how Ive been able to be the same Sumner that grew up on a ranch in a small town in Texas. I believe my resilience and work ethic is what sets me apart. I am apart of every little thing with my music from start to finish. I write my music, produce my own vocals, executive produce my songs, make my own costumes for music videos and photoshoots, creative direct, etc. Im a creative at heart so while yes it’s a lot, it’s extremely fulfilling. I actually handmade the chain cross top in the photos for my latest song release ‘OMG!’ It took me 6+ months to make but was so worth it to see my vision come to life. A lot of sleepless nights but thats okay, I couldnt be happier.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Have many mentors. Always go into a room believing you have something to learn about and from each and every person there. Having a genuine interest in people and their story is not only human, it’s necessary in forging relationships as important as a mentor, colleague or friend. If you go into the room believing you’re the smartest person there, well, I got bad news for you.
