Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Collom.
Hi Steve, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After being a touring artists for 10 years I was sick of the ups and downs of the road. All the long hours traveling and being away from family. I started looking into the the sync world. A way that I could get my music placed in TV shows and movies all the while spending time with my family or even just sitting at the beach.
The long journey of learning what to do and what not to do meant long hours, getting up early and writing music and songs that i hoped could be used. It took about 12 months for me to land my first paid placement with the university of Phoenix. Not long after that I secured a placement on the hit tv show the Big Bang Theory. This well and truly confirmed to me that this was my path and so I worked even harder to get better at my craft, to keep learning what the industry needed and who needed it. I knew that I had to have thick skin in order to be successful but that didn’t make it easy. I ended up coming up with a rule that it takes 9 no’s or 9 rejections to get one yes or acceptance. Knowing this I set out to get at least 3 rejections a week. Funny to think that this was the goal but it worked. As I started to get more no’s I also got more yes’s. I started signing my new singer songwriter songs to publishers across the globe and landed placements with Honda, AAA, Circle K, Subway, Nokia and thousands of tv shows. I stopped counting my paid placements when I got to 10,000 an that was about 5 years ago. I had reached a level of success that I could only dream about and artists started asking me how I did it and what was the steps I took. I loved helping other artists secure the success that I had so I started a coaching program to help my students get their own placements. I found a whole new passion for coaching other artists how to achieve their own success. The joy that it brings me when one of my students lands a placement on a TV show or movie is truly rewarding. Just last week one of my students told me that they landed 30 songs using the things I showed them.
With this new passion of coaching I have started my life coaching brand where I not only help artists but business owners and coaches alike how to level up their businesses.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the challenges I have faced are the fear of failure. I remember being so afraid of looking bad or being judged that I would 2nd guess everything I posted of social media for procrastinate reaching out to industry pros. The lists goes on but when I finally faced that fear and stepped out into the unknown that is when I truly began to find success. Collect the no’s has been a big part of my philosophy
Another obstacle that I continually faced is the trolls and haters. It’s amazing how the brighter you shine or the more successful you become the more of a target you become for trolls and haters who will spend so much time and energy to post comments that are mean, hurtful and untrue. I have had to learn that hurting people hurt people.
As a famous song says “The haters gonna hate” this is just something that will continue to grow as someone continues to become more successful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
