Conversations with Stephen Shenboyejo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Shenboyejo

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey began with a deep-rooted passion for storytelling and film from an early age. Growing up, I was fascinated by movies and their power to captivate audiences, evoke emotions, and shed light on real-life issues. This love for storytelling inspired me to pursue a career in filmmaking, so I took every opportunity to hone my skills through practice, education, and collaboration with other creatives.

I started by working on small projects and gradually moved up to producing and directing Music videos, Tv Commercials, Documentaries and short films, which allowed me to refine my craft and develop my voice as a filmmaker. Along the way, I focused on creating meaningful stories that resonate with audiences and address critical social themes. This approach helped my work gain recognition, leading to multiple awards in film festivals across the U.S., Europe, and beyond.

One of my notable projects, Alone, explored themes of solitude and mental well-being. This short narrative film struck a chord with both audiences and industry professionals, gaining attention from major Hollywood studios, and even attracting a follow from the Golden Globes on social media. The film’s success led to nominations and awards, and it was recently recommended as an educational tool due to its impactful storytelling.

Today, I’m focused on larger, high-stakes projects that tackle universal themes like justice, identity, and resilience, as well as exploring the intersection of African heritage and science fiction. My journey has been shaped by resilience, collaboration, and a commitment to telling stories that inspire and transform, and I’m excited about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in this creative journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been anything but smooth, but each challenge has been an important part of my growth. Early in my career, resources were limited, which meant I had to get creative with minimal budgets and limited access to equipment. I had to juggle multiple roles on set and work long hours, often without a team, to bring my visions to life. This taught me resourcefulness and adaptability, qualities that still shape my approach today.

One of the biggest challenges has been gaining recognition in an industry that can be incredibly competitive. Breaking through to a larger audience required a lot of persistence and resilience. I also faced the challenge of balancing artistic vision with the practical realities of filmmaking, especially as budgets grew and projects became more ambitious. When creating a film like Alone, which tackled sensitive issues like mental health, I needed to ensure the story was both impactful and respectful—a challenge that required research, empathy, and a careful approach to storytelling.

Another ongoing challenge has been navigating cultural expectations while working on projects with international appeal. I aim to tell stories with universal relevance, especially those set in or inspired by African narratives, while making them accessible and compelling for a global audience. It’s a delicate balance, but one that I’m passionate about and continue to embrace.

These obstacles have shaped me into a more resilient and adaptable filmmaker, and they remind me that each struggle brings valuable lessons and ultimately strengthens my storytelling.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is centered around film production, where I specialize in creating powerful narratives that resonate with audiences on a deep, emotional level. I’m known for producing and directing films that don’t just entertain but also provoke thought, inspire change, and bring important social issues to light. One of my focuses has been exploring complex human themes, from solitude and mental well-being to justice and resilience, which has allowed me to connect with audiences on a meaningful level.

One of the projects I’m most proud of is my short narrative film Alone. This film dives into themes of isolation and mental health, and its success has been both inspiring and humbling. Alone won multiple awards, received quality reviews, and garnered attention from major Hollywood studios. It was even recommended as an educational tool, with reviewers praising its creativity and relevance. This recognition and support from the industry, especially in Hollywood and from prestigious organizations, are accomplishments that I’m genuinely proud of.

What sets me apart from others is my commitment to delivering stories that combine Hollywood-level quality with universal, yet often culturally-rooted, themes. I focus on creating international-standard scripts and productions, ensuring that even when telling stories with a Nigerian or African backdrop, they feel global and accessible. I aim to capture nuanced, authentic perspectives while maintaining a high level of storytelling that resonates across different cultures. This approach, along with a dedication to cinematic excellence, helps my work stand out in today’s diverse film landscape.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always the curious type—constantly asking questions and seeking to understand the world around me. I’ve always been a deep thinker, and that often translated into a fascination with stories. Whether it was through books, movies, or conversations with others, I loved exploring different perspectives and immersing myself in narratives that explored human experiences.

Personality-wise, I was a bit introverted, often preferring to observe and reflect before speaking or taking action. This gave me a unique ability to notice the subtleties in people’s emotions, interactions, and behaviors, which, in hindsight, has helped me a lot in my work as a filmmaker. I was also determined and hardworking from an early age, always driven to pursue things that I was passionate about, whether it was learning something new or pushing my limits creatively.

Interest-wise, I was drawn to storytelling in all its forms. As a child, I would often create my own stories, whether through writing, drawing, or even acting them out with friends. My love for movies grew early on, and I became fascinated by how films could captivate, move, and challenge audiences. I was always drawn to stories with depth, meaning, and emotional complexity—things that could connect with people on a personal level.

This passion for storytelling, combined with my reflective nature, ultimately led me to pursue filmmaking as a career, where I could channel my curiosity and creativity into projects that explore meaningful themes and provoke thoughtful discussion.
