Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Fisher
Hi Shelby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Life has a funny way of getting us on our divine path. Even with moments of complete uncertainty, I can now look back and say, I have always been right where I was meant to be. Growing up on the reserved end of middle class in a small town, I had dreams for a big life full of variety and beautiful things. Music and fashion were always my passion. My first job was in retail. By understanding wants and needs I could help others feel as good as they looked. I had visions of being the Santa from Miracle on 34th Street although, I never worked at Macys. It was fast pace, creative, and lovely to be around passionate people. By the mid 2000’s mall culture was dying and the glass ceiling was getting closer. An opportunity to go on tour full time cracked my world open in an exhilarating way. The music industry taught me about business and culture while traveling the world. I learned energetic flow of sound connecting the natural and spiritual world. As the music industry came to an abrupt halt during the pandemic my free time turned to skill building. I bought my first sewing machine. Many years earlier I had spent time with my grandma Bilma who showed me how to make place mats. She walked me through the isles of the fabric store and showed me how to set up the Singer sewing machine as she told me stories of her mother Angelina. Angelina, born in 1911, came from El Salvador to San Francisco working her way up from the factory floor to being one of the first women to own her textile shop in the Bay Area. All these years later this story repeated in the back of my mind. In a time of confusion and loss of direction life brought me back to my roots. Crossing Mulholland is the journey of personal success. As a California kid I grew up conscious of water waste, recycling and well, just a pure love for the natural world. Crossing Mulholland brings vision to fruition from a foundation of research. Connecting ethical practices with practical uses.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I like to call obstacles “skill building”. From a distance nearly every road block feels like a giant boulder but maybe it’s just prospective. As soon as the big scary object is approached it becomes solvable or disappears all together. My biggest challenges in building Crossing Mulholland are typical first time challenges. How do I register with the government and make this thing legit? Taxes..who can help me with those? RN how do I get that and what’s it going to cost me? Getting creative on funding and audience expansion has been the most recent struggles. Owning a business is just another form of creativity. There is always a solutions and I typically find it when in the shower. Thinking to myself “if I could do anything, how would I overcome this” then trying it! get out of your own way. Go from thought to action and letting go of the result. Because guess what? you get to try all your ideas as many times as you would like until there is movement. The reward is worth all the effort for something you are truly passionate about. Also, pay attention to the things that aren’t budging. Those are signs to redirect your efforts.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Have you ever listened to jazz music and gotten calm or put on a party playlist to get amped before going out? what about when your injured. you put on a bandaid with a cotton swap right? No one is out there wrapping themselves in plastic hoping to heal faster. Research shows that natural fabrics hold a higher energetic frequency than synthetics. Mind blowing! Wearing natural fabrics can promote positive functions on a cellular level. Crossing Mulholland chooses to use natural fabrics because we want to promote the well-being of both our clients and the planet.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Speak your truth, ask questions and go where the love is. There is no merit in withholding information. Not everyone shares that point of view. Seek those that want to share ideas and build with them. Don’t expect to find one master guru. Grow your circles of people. Let each person influence a different part of who you aspire to be.
