Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hollis
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I was a kid, I adored watching Saturday morning cartoons. From the classic Warner Bros. with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck; to the more recent cartoons that my generation grew up with like Spongebob Squarepants. I was always fascinated with the process in how these classic shows were made, but I never considered it as a career until I was a Junior in high school. By that point, I was way behind the curve of my peers so I struggled at the start. All throughout my schooling at Kansas City Art Institute I was constantly trying to improve. Even through the Covid pandemic I was adamant on finishing my Junior and Senior films. I graduated in 2021, and when I look back I’m filled with a sweet fondness for the friends I made. As of now, I am a freelance animator, and small business owner. I work on indie pilots, and I create my own stickers! I plan to have my own booth at festivals so people can really see me, and my art!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been hills and valleys in my journey to become an animator, and there still are low points that I face. The most obvious challenge for any artist is getting a foothold into the industry, and I am no exception. It’s challenging to do what I love, but also to earn a living wage. This is difficult to do even for animators that have worked in the industry for decades. I have supportive parents who understand this. As I work on my commissions, portfolio, and social media; I know that I will always have a safe place to live, and people to help me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have been a 2D animator for 8 years, and I specialize in character animation. I am known for my smooth movements and poses for my characters. I currently have 30K followers on Instagram, and I am very proud of being able to build an online community of people who love my work. I look forward to sharing my work, and lifting up smaller artists so their work can be seen. I’m still not used to the idea that I have a small platform, and whatever I say or post; potentially thousands of people will see. However, the main goal I had when becoming an animator was to create something that inspires people, and to make their day just a little better. I believe that I have achieved that goal, but I am far from finished. It’s hard to find the little things that make you feel better, but I want to do whatever I can to give people something. Even if it’s a cute animation of a puppy.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I work independently, but I’m supported by thousands. Whether they are followers on my social media, or close friends and family. I know that whatever I do, there will always be people to help and support me.
