Sanghyun, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin? 
My journey in architecture has been quite dynamic, weaving through various disciplines and experiences that have shaped my career. It all started with my academic pursuits. I initially studied architecture and engineering, earning both a Master of Architecture and a Master of Engineering from The Ohio State University. This dual background provided me with a solid foundation in both the creative and technical aspects of the field. 

My thirst for advanced knowledge led me to the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), where I obtained a Master of Science in Architectural Technology. This program was pivotal as it introduced me to the newest tools and technologies and innovative design methodologies, fueling my passion for integrating technology with architectural design. 

Professionally, I’ve had the privilege of working with some incredible firms. As a Project Designer at Patterns, I was involved in a variety of innovative projects that challenged conventional architectural norms, allowing me to engage deeply with the creative process and contribute to impactful architectural solutions… 

Research has always been a cornerstone of my career. At SCI-Arc, I served as an Associate Researcher, working on projects funded by EPIC Games and Google AMI. This role allowed me to explore the future of architecture through the lens of technology, blending virtual and physical spaces in novel ways. 

Teaching is another passion of mine. I’ve had the honor of teaching at esteemed institutions like UCLA, Seoul National University, and SCI-Arc. These experiences have been incredibly rewarding, as I’ve had the chance to mentor and learn from the next generation of architects. Programs like Digital Futures and the AA Visiting School Seoul have been particularly exciting, as they push the boundaries of architectural education. 

Additionally, I’ve served as a juror at several institutions, including UCLA and SCI-Arc. This role has been instrumental in recognizing and fostering emerging talent in the architectural community, which is something I deeply value. 

In essence, my journey has been about continuous learning and bridging different facets of architecture, engineering, and technology. Each step has been a building block, shaping my approach to design and research. I’m excited to continue exploring new frontiers in architecture and contributing to the field in meaningful ways. 

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth roads are rare in any profession, and my journey in architecture has certainly had its share of bumps and turns. One of the main challenges has been balancing the diverse aspects of my career. Juggling roles in design, research, and education requires a lot of time management and prioritization. Each of these areas demands a different set of skills and focus, and shifting between them can be challenging. 

One of the most significant challenges I faced was transitioning from engineering to architecture. My academic background includes a Master of Engineering alongside my Master of Architecture from The Ohio State University. Bridging the gap between these two disciplines required a fundamental shift in my mode of thinking. Engineering is very analytical and problem-solving oriented, focused on precision and functionality. Architecture, while also technical, requires a more holistic and creative approach, integrating aesthetics, human experience, and broader contextual considerations. 

Filling this gap wasn’t easy. I had to learn to balance the precision and technical rigor of engineering with the fluid, creative, and sometimes abstract nature of architectural design. This transition required me to develop a new set of skills and a different mindset. I had to become comfortable with ambiguity and learn to embrace the iterative, sometimes non-linear process of design. 

During my academic pursuits, particularly while completing my Master of Science in Architectural Technology at SCI-Arc, the workload was intense. The program was rigorous, with a heavy emphasis on integrating the newest technology with traditional architectural practices. Managing the demands of such a challenging program while staying creative and innovative was tough but incredibly rewarding. 

Transitioning from academic settings to professional environments also presented its own set of challenges. Working as a Project Designer at Patterns and as a Designer at Isida Rehm Studio, I had to quickly adapt to different team dynamics and project expectations. Each firm had its own unique culture and workflow, and finding my place within these settings while contributing meaningfully required flexibility and resilience. 

Another significant challenge was undertaking research projects funded by EPIC Games and Google AMI at SCI-Arc. These projects were at the forefront of architectural technology, exploring uncharted territories. The pressure to deliver groundbreaking results while navigating the uncertainties inherent in innovative research was immense. However, these experiences also pushed me to think outside the box and develop creative solutions to complex problems. 

Teaching has its own set of hurdles. Engaging students, especially in highly specialized programs like Digital Futures and the AA Visiting School Seoul, demands not only deep knowledge but also the ability to inspire and motivate. Balancing my time between teaching responsibilities and my own professional development has been a delicate act. 

Despite these challenges, each struggle has been a learning opportunity. They have taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of continuous learning. These experiences have shaped me into a more versatile and empathetic professional, capable of navigating the complexities of the architectural field. 

In summary, while the road has had its rough patches, each challenge has contributed to my growth. They have made the journey all the more rewarding and have prepared me for the multifaceted career I have today. 

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’d be happy to share more about my work. As a Project Designer at a boutique architecture firm, I’m involved in all phases of architectural design and coordination. Our firm focuses on creating custom design solutions that are not only functional but also uniquely aesthetic. Each project is approached with a fresh perspective, aiming to reflect our clients’ needs and aspirations. 

In my role, I handle everything from the initial concept to detailed design and construction coordination. This involves working closely with clients to understand their vision, developing innovative design solutions, and ensuring that every detail is carefully planned and executed. I find it incredibly rewarding to see ideas turn into beautiful, functional spaces that people can enjoy. 

One of the areas I focus on is integrating advanced technologies with traditional architectural practices. My background in architectural technology and engineering helps me bridge the gap between innovative design and practical implementation. This means using cutting-edge tools and materials to enhance the functionality and sustainability of our projects while maintaining their aesthetic appeal. 

I’ve been fortunate to work on research projects funded by EPIC Games and Google AMI, exploring the intersection of virtual and physical spaces. Bringing insights from this research into real-world projects is something I’m quite proud of, as it allows us to push the boundaries of what’s possible in architectural design. 

What sets me apart is my interdisciplinary approach. With training in both engineering and architecture, I can address design challenges from multiple angles. I strive to create designs that are not only visually striking but also structurally sound and technologically advanced. This holistic perspective helps me deliver comprehensive solutions that meet both the aesthetic and practical needs of our clients. 

I’ve also had the opportunity to teach at institutions like UCLA, Seoul National University, and SCI-Arc, which has been incredibly enriching. Teaching keeps me engaged with the latest developments in architecture and allows me to share my knowledge and experience with aspiring architects.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Great question! So, something that might surprise people who know my work is that despite my serious, tech-driven architectural projects, I have a passion for furniture design. I love creating custom pieces that blend form and function—it’s a fantastic way to bring my architectural ideas to a more intimate, tangible scale. 

Another surprising tidbit is that I’m really into music. I play the guitar and dabble in songwriting. There’s something incredibly satisfying about composing a piece of music; it’s like designing a space but with sound. It’s a nice break from the architectural blueprints and keeps the creative juices flowing.
