Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy Ng
Hi Roy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Im a sneakerhead that thrives in social settings. Whether it is a party, a rave, or some artsy event, I am down! With my love of music and over 100 events a year, why not make a career out of it? An insurance agent in the day, and an event coordinator in the night.
My involvement began from moderating the largest ticket trading group online for EDM events with over 90k members on Facebook- The Rave Exchange. I slowly built connections with other ravers and people who work in the industry and eventually realized I could plan my own events. Fortunately, I discovered IKU, a talented up-and-coming DJ based in LA, and became his manager as we helped each other grow tremendously.
Aside from finding him gigs to play at, I was able to help increase his following. We have already created several viral moments on social media and have many more things planned for the future as well. For our most recent event we threw a pop up rave at a hotpot restaurant in Cerritos. This time we had over 190+ atteendees and went viral multiple times online.
I am currently independent and work for myself and have just started to name my production company called DIY Raves. My goal for this upcoming year is to throw bigger and better events at local businesses to promote them whilst having a great time doing so. At the time of this article, I have already connected with several cafes, restaurants, and even a gym for future events. If you want to stay connected with what I do, follow me on Instagram at purpleperfection.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not, but thankfully I work with a DJ that has so much potential it is a lot easier to work with. I am also grateful for the friends that would come out to support our events. I have witnessed many people that were in my position who continued to keep grinding and eventually got to where they are, so it inspires me to keep my head down and keep pushing. Fortunately, these last several months have been very rewarding with the turnouts and there appears to be a growing demand from the events I helped curate; and it feels amazing to see results.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Proud of my work ethic, and unique ways to create something new. Anyone can throw a party or an event, but I always think how can I make mine a once in a lifetime opportunity without a crazy budget or connections. I want it to be different; I want it to be underground; and I don’t want it to be commercialized. I love throwing events for the people and with a theme involved so it’s not just another typical “rave”.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me is that I am surrounded by good people. I only care for genuine, supportive people around me and I want to be proud to be able to introduce a friend to another. My favorite artist is Griz, and he always preaches love. His motto is Show Love, Spread Love, so hopefully one day I would have enough influence to create a positive community of my own as I live by that belief.
