Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Laur’en.
Hi Rebekah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a Singer, Songwriter, Producer, and Composer from Virginia. My favorite genre to write and sing is R&B, however, I also write pop, country, and many other genres. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from Westminster Choir College where I gained my classical training as a full lyric soprano. Shortly after training in opera, I found myself on another musical journey. I continued creating original music with a unique sound and style placement of an alternative R&B artist.
It’s been a rollercoaster full of many ups and downs but it has been worth the ride. Enjoying the journey and the process is something I’ve had to learn to do. At one point, my sound was hard for people to “categorize” so I was told repeatedly it was a major challenge but I later learned it is my advantage, my strength, and the thing that defines me and sets me apart from other artists.
Learning how the business works, in general, is a major challenge in itself but I’ve definitely learned. I can say a lot but that will be pages and pages. I’ve had my times of not believing in myself but then remembering who I am. I’ve had my times of listening to the wrong voice and not trusting myself. I’ve gone through some major challenges, but it’s all been a part of making me who I am.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create original music by simply just sitting down at my piano or on my guitar and just allowing my heart to speak. I mix a lot of my classical influences with my R&B vibes. I make music and tell stories that hit areas of the heart that at times need healing, light, sunshine, and just need to breathe. I am my music. There is no smoke and mirrors there.
We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
Musicians are complete risk takers! The risk we take to create music and present it to so many people in hopes it will become someone’s favorite song is an automatic risk. To get on a stage and share yourself intimately with others is pure risk, but you do it and you don’t regret it. Infact, you fly when you believe in yourself and take those risks. What’s life without taking a risk? You’re not fully living if you’re not taking risks.
