Conversations with Raziq Rauf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raziq Rauf.

Raziq Rauf

Hi Raziq, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a writer – a journalist – by trade. I’ve been doing it since I was a teenager when writing for the UK’s version of Pitchfork paid for my way through college.

When I moved to Los Angeles in 2014, I took to running to help me understand the lay of the land. I know my way through DTLA like the back of my hand now. I was running so much that I decided to take the training to become a USATF running coach.

This year, I decided to blend my two passions and launch my newsletter, Running Sucks.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been injuries, babies, and having to get my head around how hot the summers can be in NELA. This year, I finally learned how to run at 6am through the summer. In terms of running and writing productivity, it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done. I’m finally a morning person!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I spent my 20s making a name for myself as a music journalist. I was successful enough. I wrote for the biggest titles and spent time with some of the most illustrious artists of my generation.

I made a point of giving that lifestyle up when I moved to LA, though.

Starting afresh as a journalist in a new industry – running – has been a wonderful time. Instead of rock stars on speed dial, I now have Olympic athletes. It feels great that I have been able to transfer all my journalistic nous to a completely different field.

I still try to shine a light on important stories and – even as an independent – I’ve managed to get half a dozen scoops in the 8 months I’ve been in operation.

What makes you happy?
I love spending time with my family. LA is a great place for that – expensive but great. There’s so much to do, as long as you look for it.

I love running. I love writing.

I’ve chosen a simple life.

I still go watch more bands than 99% of the population, of course. I am surrounded by an embarrassment of riches.
