Conversations with Rachel Brockbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Brockbank.

Hi Rachel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
“Tishmal is my native name. It means hummingbird in luiseño, or chaamtela, the language of my native American heritage. This name was given to me when I was about 11 years old—around the same time I began to seriously write music; turning my dreams into poetry, and then into songs. I don’t think that timing is a coincidence at all.” – tishmal

Tishmal’s star is rapidly rising, opening dates for big names like chvrches, the aces, Zara Larsson, hippie sabotage, xylø, and the moth & the flame. Her brand of brooding, intelligent pop is finding a home with critical listeners desperately wanting more depth from the electro-pop scene. Tishmal moved to la from New York in 2021 and has since been steadily releasing music with Christian Medice (lovelytheband, Demi Lovato).

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The pandemic was definitely a difficult time as I was no longer able to tour. I had just finished a tour with the Aces and opened for artists like Zara Larson and then the touring industry shut down. I was able to spend more time in the studio and work remotely with DJs overseas like Marc Benjamin and across country Kaskade. The one silver lining from the pandemic was being able to collaborate with so many other incredible artists.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love writing music that is pop but with an indie / electronic influence. I started writing poetry in the second grade and try to go back to my roots any time I am writing lyrics. Being raised in a multicultural family (native and white) has been a huge gift to my creative process. I find so much inspiration and connectedness to nature. I am best known for my work with Kaskade and my song ‘On My Way Up’ released last year.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I love composting and save most of kitchen scraps. I also modeled professionally in NYC for a few years. My birthday is 11/11 and I HAVE A NEW SINGLE COMING OUT THAT SAME DAY :). It’s called ‘Beautiful People’.
