Conversations with Prerana Srikatappa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Prerana Srikatappa.

Hi Prerana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi ! I’m Prerana Srikantappa and I made my way to Los Angeles from India to study my master’s in fashion merchandising and that’s how my journey began. During the summer of 2022, while I was applying for internships, I came across the world of public relations and styling and there was no stopping me after. Ever since, I have worked as a stylist, managing editor for the Vulkan Magazine and in celebrity & brand public relations where I represented luxury brands while also building VIP client relations with A-listers.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It wasn’t an easy path for sure. I was a software engineer and didn’t really love what I was doing. Initially, my mindset set me back a lot. I’d say, coming from where I come from, I had to break the norms and quit a corporate job to pursue a creative career instead. Right in the middle of the pandemic, I pivoted towards fashion and moved to Los Angeles to follow my dream. In the end, it is all worth it. You have to go through the bad to appreciate the good.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

I work as a stylist and in celebrity and brand public relations. In May of 2022, I got to attend one of my first couture shows in Venice Beach, California, when I styled fashion’s ‘It-Boy’, Rahi Chadda, for the Dior Men’s Resort 2023 Show. The exclusive event was in partnership with ERL brand and the buzzy label brought out some of the elites of Hollywood. Along with that, I assisted the British Asian Influencer with campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana and Berluti in Malibu over the summer.

I also had the opportunity to work for stylist Shaleena Nathani in styling Deepika Padukone for the Cannes Film Festival in 2022 where she was chosen as the jury member.

During the recently concluded fashion month, I had a pinch-me moment when I was invited to see the Fendi Baguette’s 25th Anniversary Show in New York. The season was nothing short of a dream and I enjoyed every minute of what New York had to offer. I was also a part of Los Angeles Fashion Week, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz.

Last month, I had the opportunity to work with stylist Nikita Jaisinghani in styling Ram Charan, a lead in the RRR movie which made over 1000 crores worldwide and is now available on Netflix. Ram Charan wore an Indian attire from Tarun Tahiliani for the Golden Globes and made it to the Best Dressed Men List.

Most recently, I got to work with Roberto Cavalli with custom outfits for Cardi B and DJ Khaled for the Grammys in February of 2023.

What do you think about luck?
When I moved to Los Angeles, I only knew that I wanted to work in fashion and was still very clueless of what I wanted to be. I tried working in many job roles but none of them were fulfilling. Getting my first job as a stylist and starting off with a high opened a lot of doors for me. I think I was extremely lucky to be able to break into the industry and work with amazing talents. Luck has definitely been on my side when I have pursued something I am truly passionate about.
