Conversations with Orangekhemist

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Brown.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Orangkhemist aka Jason Brown is a bass music producer/DJ who resides on the West Coast of California. Since starting his career at Whomp Humboldt he has immersed himself in all levels audio production and bass music culture. In 2019, after a move back to his roots in Southern California , Jason started Citrus Grove Collective & Wub Wedneday. Citrus grove is a collective of bass music artists and Wub Wednesdays is a weekly sound system event. Orangekhemist produces his signature drippy sound with a combination Ableton, hardware synths ,vinyl scratching ,and collaborating with other artists such as , ZONE Drums,C.V, Funkbox, Mr. Eos, Suds, Fulleetones, and Infrasonic Dubs. One genre does not define his sound and all original sets
consist of glitch-hop, halftime, experimental bass, 140, DnB, downtempo and live scratching. Diving into live audio production, Jason started the company Full Spectrum and the sonic waves of this project are meant to utilize sound systems to their full potential to give listeners a top level experience.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Along the way I’ve dealt with a lot of ups and downs. After teaching myself to DJ in 2018 i decided i wanted to produce with ableton to this took a couple years of making a song everyday to get half way decent at it. The progress was slow at first but now i am up to speed and pushing out music all the time. Starting a weekly event was one of the biggest struggles as our area was lacking a strong community. It’s taken 5 years to bring that event to fruition with acts like Mystic Grizzly and Pheel playing our biggest shows . Starting a collective of artists can always be a challenge when it comes to getting all the music together for a proper release. We had to find custom art that fit each project from people like Bill.bee and spectrumone. Sometimes conveying my vision to an artists is challenging as they cannot just imagine what i want. One of the biggest challenges was planning a 6 stop West Coast Tour with the boys Mr. Eos. We contacted every venue and promoter our selves and rented a van and camped for 3 weeks on the road from san diego to portland . We brought my bass boss sound system and had to set it up at and break down at every spot besides performing for the night . Those three weeks were some of the hardest but most rewarding shows i’ve played .

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
ORANGEKHEMIST :
At heart I am an artist and I strive to share art with the world. Art and music are healing and i believe more people should enjoy it . Hi-fidelity sound-systems have been a passion of mine since i first heard one and i’ve played on systems such as funktion one , hennessey , void , danley , bassboss and dubsmugglers. I built my own home studio with barefoot speakers and an intent audio subwoofer. I strive to have my music sound great and translate correctly to other systems. Musically, I don’t let one genre define me and am always working on new projects at whatever bpm seems fit. I make a
mix of 140, glitch-hop, drumn bass and all different types of experimental bass music . Something that helps me stand apart from the rest is all original sets with unreleased music and live scratching. I try to make as many new songs for each set as possible. I also have over 30 released tracks to date and 200 unreleased tracks I play out ! Through the last 6 years i have played over 100 shows in 6 different states including CA, OR, WA, TN, AL, GA. My last show to date was in Huntsville Alabama for one of the Tipper and Friends Orion after party’s. Some notable acts at the after party were Detox Unit, K.L.O. , Supertask, The Widdler.

Most recently I self-released and mastered, a 5 track EP named ‘Squiggle Vision’, that contains experimental glitch-hop tracks ranging from 92 -98 bpm. A few of these tracks contain live vinyl scratching and there’s a collab with C.V.(be on the look out for our upcoming collab ep).
Some of my past hit singles have been “Deep Goop” and ‘Serendripity’ both with Zone Drums features. These were released on Denver based label Lysergia Collective. Another few popular tracks in the 140 range have been Dub Code(Shadow Trix), Flute Mon(Citrus Grove Collective) and Sharper Dub(Delirium Project).

schooling :
I started taking piano lessons when i was 7 and continued until i taught myself how to play electric guitar through youtube and tablature as a freshmen in highschool. I took acoustic guitar in senior year of high school and then a few years after graduating i took a year long music production program at the Orange coast college.

I recently went back to school to become a sound technician at Fullerton College. I achieved my certification and have now moved onto Cal state dominguez hills for my sound engineering Degree. i

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’d love to give credit to every artists who’s collaborated with Citrus Grove Collective and Wub Wednesday. We’ve had over 100 artists release with us and over 300 play our event. Id like to thank marki webster aka @marloparty for leading the flow community and sharing space with us. I appreciate all the love painters and vendors that have frequented our events with awesome art. I’d love tho thank hundreds of different people who have attended any wub , citrus grove or orangekhemist event .
As far as mentor wise I’d like to thank Suds for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play some of my first events at Whomp Humboldt with artists like Ultrasloth, Bumble , Duffrey and Hullabaloo. These early events only career helped shape my sound and path. I saw all these artists playing their own music and i wanted that so bad. I’d like to thank some ableton/ music teachers such as Starfox , Biolumigen, and Infrasonic Dubs who pushed me to be the best i could with constructive criticism and brilliant tips. I’d also like to credit Relativity Lounge for mastering most of my early work. Mastering takes a long time to learn and in my early years having someone do it for me helped a ton. I’d also like to thank Tyler Player and Perri Srum for bringing me to my first out of state festival Astral Project in Nashville. I’d also like to thank Mr. Eos for getting on a road trip and collaborating on our first West Coast Tour. Riley nance aka earthwave / substorm productions has been a great mentor for running soundsystems. Hes worked with bass boss and has helped me get my system fine tuned for all of our bigger events . Lastly i want to thank the people/fans who have been with me the through the ups and downs of this project . I respect and love you all.
