Conversations with Olivia Olfactory

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Olfactory.

Hi Olivia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
During the pandemic, I would often go to an outdoor restaurant with my friends. One day while eating, I thought I recognized the perfume our waitress was wearing, but when I asked her if it was this $50 Ariana Grande perfume I thought I recognized, she was quite appalled and swiftly corrected me that it was in fact an exclusive $400 perfume. This naturally sent me down a YouTube rabbit hole to see if others agreed about their similarities. As the algorithm does, I was then shown perfume video after perfume video, which eventually lead me on the path to starting my own channels, where I review fragrances. Since childhood, I have always had an affinity toward scent. I find it and incredibly underutilized tool that I enjoy encouraging others to explore and develop.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, I was a bit spoiled. The growth on social media was fast and abundant, but with social media comes special challenges. Behind the anonymity of a screen, viewers will say just about anything they want with deep disregard to the feelings of the individual behind the videos. This is something I’ve learned not to take personally or engage with.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Perfume Reviewer and Content Creator on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok (@oliviaolfactory) I create videos about perfume that paint a picture to the audience. Some enjoy it in the same way as ASMR, some are die-hard perfume collectors looking for recommendations. And my favorite is the individuals who never even considered themselves interested in fragrances until watching these videos. I aim to aid anywhere from novice to expert and share the love and passion of perfumery.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I find all places to be the same. It’s truly what you make of it that will shape your experience. If you let yourself be bothered by the negative attributes of the city, you are destined to have a bad time. But when you embrace the chaos: the bumper to bumper traffic, the tacky plastic surgery billboards that line the street, the $16 lavender oat milk lattes, you can look past the absurdity to see the abundance of creavity, warmth, and joy to be had. It’s about mindset, and that applies to anywhere you go.
