Conversations with Nina-Nicole Cockrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina-Nicole Cockrell.

Hi Nina-Nicole, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I discovered my love for dancing at a very early age. I was absolutely mesmerized watching ballet movies on DVD, going to performances, and always dancing around the house. Thankfully my parents took notice and put me into my first dance class at three years old. I absolutely loved performing, being on the stage was my favorite! I tried many forms of dance – tap, jazz, even theater, but ballet was always my favorite. It was structured, graceful but strong, and so detail-oriented. Telling a story, never saying a word. I knew I wanted ballet to be apart of my life forever, and wanted to pursue it further. I started at a small recreational studio, not really knowing anything about ballet or the world of dance at all, but thanks to a friend, I found out about a dance conservatory holding scholarship auditions and ended up auditioning. I was accepted and at age 8, I started my pre-professional training and was able to learn more about the world of ballet, and start attending summer intensives, competitions, performed in new places, and developed my technique and passion for dance. At age 15, I sought out a more well-rounded and professional school that would better assist me toward my goals. I ended up transitioned to a new ballet school, and where I finished my training, Dmitri Kulev Classical Ballet Academy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not a smooth road by any means — with so many challenges throughout my journey, and I continue to still deal with them every day. I’m grateful regardless, as every obstacle provides opportunity for growth and building mental strength!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a ballet dancer, content creator, artist, and entrepreneur. I’m passionate about all things creative (mostly dance/ballet), but so many other things as well. I love to create, & connect with and inspire others in any way. Little videos, films, vegan recipes, art, writing, photography, design, editing, I love it all! I’m excited to develop my own businesses, and podcast (The Prima Podcast available wherever you listen to podcasts!), among other things, alongside my ballet career. I’m also grateful to represent leading dance-wear companies, such as Discount Dance and WorldWideBallet as an ambassador for over six years.
